I want to share a fediverse test resource I've started putting together over the last few days. It's a minimal config sandbox with automatically provisioned SSL and DNS for fedi services. A lot of apps refuse to federate with instances that don't have ssl or proper domain names, as a security measure. This makes that easy to run locally for testing.

https://github.com/Letterbook/Sandcastles

It's worked for the few people who've tried it out so far, so please have at it.

@jenniferplusplus oh hey, very nice!

@jenniferplusplus @activitypubtestsuite thanks! I'll try to keep this in mind when/if I get to the federation part of my current project. Should prove to be very useful.

FYI, @activitypubtestsuite - while we work to bring ActivityPubTest Suite 1.0 back to life - as a stop-gap measure- it looks like @dansup is working on this which feels very promising for a new tool…or tools. https://kbin.social/m/fediverse/p/561391/Really-excited-for-the-activityPub-developer-tools-I-ve-been-working

tchambers,

@activitypubtestsuite - question for the group: even if we were not to use it’s codebase, is there value in getting the old ActivityPub.rocks test suite live again? Just to see the old test in action?

benpate,
@benpate@mastodon.social avatar

It would be tremendously valuable. Anything that helps us test run a new app without installing a whole instance of some other app. How much work it would take to get running? @tchambers @activitypubtestsuite

@rmdes @steve @tchambers @activitypubtestsuite Here's a more long-winded version - a blog post with a simpler Dockerfile, instructions, and details of how far I got before failing: https://opinionatedgeek.com/Blog/2023/6/27/failing-to-run-pubstrate-in-a-container

tchambers,

@activitypubtestsuite - putting a link to this doc in this group account’s bio…anyone who has additional links to add DM me…. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l46VNMY_ULZmf0lGPKJ86a_umHqGv--WA0fynVjQaRQ/edit

brettk,

@activitypubtestsuite Hey all! Just a quick intro to the group: I've had an interest in the indieweb for a while now, and the fediverse more recently, and when I heard about this project I figured I might be able to chip in, especially as I'll have a lot of free cycles soon.

In terms of skillset, I'm an experienced coder (lots of Ruby lately but I'm a polyglot), I've read and implemented a few specs (though not AP), and written a couple as well. So if I can be of any help, let me know!

liaizon,
@liaizon@wake.st avatar

@brettk you still looking to get involved in AP stuff?

tchambers,

Wowza. This @activitypubtestsuite group now has 66 members!

New folks interested in helping out: chime in with your background and where you'd like to help...

BTW, where is a blog post version of a long 🧵of a rant I did yesterday on things Meta, that - no need to go into that part - but closed with why the need for a Test Suite for Activity Pub was a super big deal, and we need one - even in alpha form as soon as we can....

Let's get the ball rolling... so apparently @dansup has a testing suite he could publish?

@tchambers @activitypubtestsuite @helge exciting piece of code and ideas / implementation.. I'm wondering how much @manton activity micro.blog handles per day, at the platform level.. (my blog is MB but I'm not (yet) using @rmdes)
