Why does silicone have this confusing name? Turns out "silicone" is short for silicoketone. There are silicon atoms in the compound but it is very far from being a chemical element.

@mrundkvist Reminds me of the time I saw a lady wearing a t-shirt that said “Silicone Valley”. (It was not in an English-speaking country.)

@mrundkvist worse - it's not really a ketone (those are C double bonded to O; C=O). Silicones are (poly)siloxanes - so not even Si=O but Si-O-Si.
