atomicpoet, #Bluesky engineer Jake Gold confirmed to me that a PDS can opt out of BGS indexing.
Which also tells me that AT protocol (and Bluesky) will allow defederation.
So there you have it, @gruber.
If you use AT protocol, you will be able to defederate from other servers for both petulant and non-petulant reasons.
