What are some things you’ve always wondered about hippocampal #Replay? ⚡🧠

@elduvelle How do the replay patterns remain stable over time, and what causes them to become unstable? Also, what (at the cellular/pathway level) causes specific activity patterns to reactivate?

For the 1stone: could you explain what you mean by 'becoming unstable with time'?
I can partially answer the 2nd one: it seems that what is replayed during the awake state "primes" or "tags" what will be replayed during sleep (see for example Huelin et al., 2023 ). As for what is replayed during the awake state.. I don't know, and I don't know if anyone knows at this stage?
The 3rd question is super interesting and I don't think anyone has tested this!

I only have a second but for the first one i meant, how how lossy are the replays. Like, memories may fade or change, recall is often inaccurate or unreliable, so does this reflect in the hippocampal replay?

Oh this is a good one! My first answer attempt would be that it’s not that replay is fast, it’s that the real-world trajectories are limited by how fast you (or the rat) can run… while replay is limited by the speed of neural processes.
But also there is this paper that shows that replay can have different speeds, including real-world speeds: Denovellis et al., 2021 (I have to read it properly) @edeno might be able to tell us more about this!
