Why aren’t doctors direct employees of the government? Am I missing something? Was that lobbying to protect income potential? How did we socialize health care without employing the people who deliver it?

vasta,

@geekingirl As someone married to a doctor, I’d heartily raise my hand for her to be a salaried government employee. It costs so much to do all the things involved in running a separate business (plus unmeasurable paperwork that takes away from time they could be delivering care) that the income differential would probably be negligible, if not positive.

@vasta @geekingirl I'm guessing the CMA is still trying to get rid of public health care, judging by the sudden explosion of clinics with "membership fees".

@geekingirl I think some doctors have staff to pay like receptionists, technicians, etc. So that $500k they get into their corporation is distributed to others as well. I was told this by an ultrasound tech.

@human3500 @geekingirl I think the problem is that we have them running a private business. I think we should move towards clinics run by the government like hospitals, so the doctors and all the staff are just clinic employees. So doctors just have to be doctors and not small business owners and employers. That would mean less paperwork for doctors while not having private companies sucking money out of the system (Appletree etc)

@geekingirl the Drs were well organized to oppose public healthcare. You probably can't force someone into employment with legislation, like we legislated access to healthcare and administration of healthcare payments.

@johnefrancis but you could make working conditions so favourable that it’s in their best interests…

@geekingirl @dairpo "after medical conscription, we were marched to the hospitals. 1 set of surgical tools, 2 surgeons. The surgeon ahead of me refused to advance into the operating room. The corporal behind us lobotomized him. I picked up the tools and advanced into the operating room. I removed a toddler's appendix and they paid me $35,000, which was a pretty fair rate at the time"
