I'm not denying Philippa Moore's life experiences. But I do think that the media panic over social media is getting out of hand.

Certainly, there's dogpiling and harassment and doomscrolling.

But I also think if people clearly understood that they can use social media in a healthy manner, their lives would improve immensely.

Take me. I saw something traumatizing on Facebook -- specifically, a live broadcast of Muslims getting mowed down by a gunman in a New Zealand mosque.

So what did I do? I deleted Facebook. And every time a social media network proves toxic, I delete it.

But we can also choose to run social media ourselves, on our terms, perhaps on our own servers too.

We must master social media. Otherwise social media becomes our master.

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews that’s the gag, though. They’re ALL toxic. The toxicity might be ideologically and directionally palatable for you personally. I’ve yet to see non-toxic social media. Even Mastadon has calls for violence on it regularly.
We have to decide that we, as a society, want to be stronger, smarter, and nicer at the expense of regular dopamine hits, and there MIGHT be a world where social media adds value to our lives.
I don’t see it.

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews If my resting heart rate got any lower I'd probably be dead

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews I never saw that kind of content on Facebook but deleted it anyway for other reasons.

I've long said that the problem with social media is, frankly, us - society and we can take responsibility for that or not.

If we give toxic content/people the oxygen it/they crave it/they will thrive and grow stronger.

But if we block and refuse to engage - well let's just try that....

pdkcooks,

@atomicpoet @socialmedianews this is how I ended up leaving Reddit a few weeks ago.

Saw a post that deeply disturbed me & decided that doom scrolling on Reddit wasn’t worth sacrificing my mental health.

I’m spending less time on algorithm driven social media because it drives more & more enraging media my way. The fediverse is driven by actual interaction & I find it to be more wholesome as a result.

It turns out gamifying our social interaction doesn’t improve it in any meaning way.

@pdkcooks @atomicpoet @socialmedianews I totally agree. Personally, i was addicted to doom scrolling twitter and my mental health has improved tremendously since leaving that site and joining mastodon. I'm engaging in more creative pursuits & reading actual books again! My brain is healing.
