Space junk in Earth orbit and on the moon will increase with future missions—but nobody's in charge of cleaning it up

There's a lot of trash on the moon right now—including nearly 100 bags of human waste—and with countries around the globe traveling to the moon, there's going to be a lot more, both on the lunar surface and in Earth's orbit.

The moon is huge, nothing lives there and it’s unlikely we’ll reach levels of trash visible from earth in the near future. So lunar surface pollution is probably one of the smallest environmental concerns of all time.

LostXOR,

Yeah, 200 tons is pretty much nothing. Humans produce billions of tons every year here on Earth.

Or the mooninites

superkret,

If we aren’t careful we’ll surround earth with a trash belt that makes launching into orbit impossible and traps us on earth for hundreds of years.

CookieJarObserver,

I just hope ot shreds more Chinese satellites in the future.

SpaceNoodle,

Tragedy of the commons.
