- M33 by Alson Wong

https://www.universomagico.net/2024/05/m33-por-alson-wong.html

Messier 33, presented here in an excellent image by astronomer Alson Wong, is popularly known as the Triangle Galaxy. Its name is not only due to the fact that it is located in the direction of the Triangulum Constellation, but it is also the third largest galaxy in the Local Group, along with the largest, the Andromeda Galaxy Messier 31 and our Milky Way, with the.....

Another “victim” of my sorting & clearing ahead of our move: five copies of my 1988 University of Edinburgh PhD thesis headed for recycling 😬✌️

But don’t panic: these are all water-damaged & I still have eight clean copies of the one hundred originally printed for me during my first postdoc at NASA Goddard 🚀🛰️

The rest were circulated to colleagues back in the early days of infrared arrays in astronomy 🔭

How far we’ve come 🙂👍

With global interest in the last week, don't forget that, for those in the high to mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere, this week marks the typical start of the clouds season.

You'll need to stay up late. Due to night-long twilight, NLC are visible from around 23:30UT to 03UT. The early morning period is the most likely to yield displays.

For the first week or two, displays may be unimpressive. But they will soon grow into midsummer.

#UMPlus - Solar flare X3.9

https://www.universomagico.net/2024/05/erupcion-solar-x39.html

The Sun emitted a strong solar flare, which peaked at 6:54 am UT on May 10, 2024. The Solar Dynamics Observatory, which observes the Sun constantly, captured an image of this event, as seen in the bright flash towards the center of the image. Solar flares are powerful explosions of energy that can affect radio communications, electrical power grids, navigation signals and.....

1112 authors for a space mission 🛰️ reference paper seems ... adequate 🤷🏽😯😁

We, the @ec_euclid will publish five main reference papers aimed at the astronomy community about the mission, the instruments, both cosmology and other astronomy science possibilities, as well as the cosmological simulations used to test all procedures.

Available coming Tuesday, 23 May, 12:00 CEST (and on arXiv a few hours later). Stay tuned!

Mills Observatory was where I saw Halley's Comet in 1986 and saw a moon rock on loan.

I just submitted a, rather impassioned, response to the survey https://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/consultations-and-surveys/mills-observatory-consultation for saving in

Built in 1935 as a gift to the city, it was intended for education and outreach. It was unique as being the only public observatory in Britain. I know there's loads of astronomers on Mastodon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
