Jeff Bezos revealed his secret to Amazon’s success 25 years ago: ‘I asked everyone around here to wake up terrified every morning, their sheets drenched in sweat’ (www.cnbc.com)

Back in the 90s, Jeff Bezos went on record as hoping his employees would wake up on the wrong side of the bed—for the greater good, or for the customer at the very least....

A nice big wheel of Wensleydale could have saved thousands of lives.

Any of them before soil depletion and banana blight. Fruits and veggies tasted so much better in the 80s. Melons in particular taste lifeless now. Once in a while I strike gold at the local farmer’s market or in our own garden.

OMG, yes. The flavor “wet” has been added to my lexicon.

Single standard door refrigerators are better than french door.

Single door is nicer bc you only have to open one door, the french doors you often have to open both bc they are too small to get to things unless it’s in the door compartment. Opening or closing both doors with things in your hands gets old, and if you want to get into the meat drawer you have to open both sides fully then...

I respect your preference. But after living with a dozen single door fridges and now one French Door fridge, the French Door fridge wins hands down for us in our house. We all much prefer it. Just fits the workspace much better.

Yes, the flappy door thing did wear out after several years. I replaced the $4 spring and voila, good as new.

The Open Web is definitely dying. Some dystopian weaponized ads hellscape of an apps-required shiternet will be around for a while.

Empathy and decency are scarce precious commodities. But the ruthless predatory “thought leaders” have been in charge ever since we clubbed the last neanderthal.

“It Was Just Business” should be engraved on whatever memorial is left behind to mark our self-extinction.

I spent a lot of time putting googly eyes on these pears and coming up with a distinct voice for each one. Why you gotta do me dirty like that.

The difference in surfing the web on my phone with pi hole vs without it is stunning. It’s almost unusable without.

Why Didn't Democrats Do More When They Controlled Both Houses of Legislature, The White House, and The Supreme Court During Obama's First Term?

I’ve been wondering for a bit why during the time the Democrats controlled the legislature, executive, and judicial branches during Obama’s first term in 2008 more wasn’t accomplished. Shouldn’t that have been the opportunity to make Row V Way law and fix the electoral college? I understand the recession was going on but...

Routine abuse of the filibuster rules by Republicans was a big part of it. Not the only reason, but a fairly major one as I recall.

And while I am a Democrat and I vote that way, I very readily admit the Democrats often bring a book to a gun fight when it comes to politics. They have good intentions but then they get steamrollered on things like SCOTUS appointments…

MBA: Shouldn’t we charge people for the privilege of opening the doors manually? How about a subscription for this service?

AI assistant: You appear to enjoy running into doors. My algorithm will lock doors in your face from now on. You’re welcome.

Exclusive: Bank of America banker who died had sought to leave, citing long hours, recruiter says (www.reuters.com)

The 35-year-old Bank of America (BAC.N) investment banker who died from a blood clot earlier this month wanted to leave the U.S. bank because he was working more than 100 hours a week, according to an executive recruiter who spoke with him about seeking a new job.

Many years ago I worked at a small community bank. Was one of the better jobs I’ve had. Then a large regional bank purchased it, and overnight it became the worst job I’ve ever had.

I love them. But they can vary significantly in taste, quality, and texture. I definitely like some better than others.

And olive oil is fundamental to cooking. (Though it’s often overused and a cheaper oil would be a better choice).

I’ve been doing it the slow manual way from MyInfo. Mainly because it’s been a good way to clean up and reorganize / trim stuff in the process. New items only go into Obsidian, of course.

Boozilla,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

Not to mention, Obsidian is such a pleasure to work with, I don’t mind doing the work manually. If I had thousands of files/folders to deal with, I’m sure I’d be hunting down an import tool of some kind. But my needs are pretty modest.

Especially on Lemmy, which does not have karma BS.

I’m curious if the trend will flip again at some point. I definitely find dark mode to be easier on my eyes for a lot of stuff, especially coding. But I don’t rage when it’s not available.

I’m old enough to remember dark mode being the default because of monochrome monitors. And then later, people were ecstatic about the faux-paper-on-the-screen concept, and dark scrrens were very passe for a period.

Wouldn’t shock me if some future monitor tech that looks more like paper and ink flipped the preference/fashion again back to light mode.

When I use Obsidian, for example, I tend to like themes that look like papyrus or sepia type tones. Not too bright or too dark. Just kind of relaxing, to my eyes anyway.

Yes, they can be slow. This is a case-by-case thing. If you plan on ripping a LOT of optical disks you may want an internal drive. If you just want to archive a few disks like the OP, an external makes more sense to me.

You can get a USB 3.0 external drive, too, but they are more expensive. The Hitachi LG Data Storage ‎GP96Y is supposed to be quite good, and works with phones, too.
