Content, the truth is, prolly never was king. Or if it was, it was a short-lived reign.

You're about as likely to make it rich off of content creation as a talented actor is to make it rich off Hollywood, or a talented basketball player is to make it rich off the NBA.

It does happen, for sure. But it doesn't happen very often.

Of all the things I miss from pre-COVID times, I think I mostly just miss American bar culture.

Strangers, on barstools, at the bar.

Watching a game, or Jeopardy, or a classic movie. Chatting with each other. Sometimes, in my case, just reading quietly, or maybe with my laptop playing a game.

But just, hangin' out, really.

Becoming, for a month here, a month there, once a whole year over there, a "regular".

Here is how unimportant your vote for Biden is:

Republican legislatures all over this country have already passed laws -- and are continuing, desperately to pass laws -- to make it impossible for you to vote.

Sugar, if your vote didn't matter, they wouldn't be trying so hard to keep you from voting, or convince you not to.

Actually, that's an interesting last sentence in that last thread: "Maybe I shoulda fought more."

One of the challenges of being an elder in the geek trades is this.

When you look at stuff in the trade, geek stuff, and you're appalled, you have to constantly wonder: is the problem really the problem you see, or is the problem the fact that you're just aging out?

People advise one not to use Chrome -- I don't -- but they also advise to use Firefox, instead -- I do -- but for the record, it is not clear to me that any of these browsers can be trusted.

It feels more like Chrome is just a chapter ahead, and the others will soon catch up.

I am deeply regretting not looking at this project for 9 months.

So much fucking bit rot in a year-old gradle/kotlin/intellij project.

Makes me cray-cray.

A developer pattern I have noticed: the Crystalizing Name.

You're designing something that's kind of complicated, and you know there's a thing that does a thing, but you don't yet know what it is, and therefore you don't yet have a name for it.

You stall, and let the mixture bubble on the back burner. Then, boom, you got the name, and the whole concept gels seemingly instantly.

I remember when I trusted the CDC.

I didn't trust them to always be right. Science is damned hard when events are breaking.

I did trust them to always do their best.

Those days are as gone as my youthful enthusiasm for ELO.

Wear a fucking mask, and fuck the fucking CDC, and if you work for the CDC, baby you brought this on yourself.

If you were a "natural" at pair programming, at pairing, let me ask you a question.

How many years into pairing were you before you began to understand that pairing was an actual skill, requiring technique, and practice, and learning, and not a universal attribute of all human programmers?

Black Lives Matter.

It is inconceivable to me that anyone else could think otherwise.

I think that "neurotypical" is way less common than people think. I think the world is quite full of people who pass, because both the neurotypical and the neuro diverse believe in a "normal" that is not.

Three interesting things about the horizon game franchise. 1) It is graphically stunning. Many of the live-action scenes are fucking beautiful. My favorite is the forest areas.

@GottaLaff Oh, and hey, since it's not a court day, and so you know I'm not just "in the moment", thank you again so much for the live-posted multi-stream work you've been doing.

I know you mostly can't do it on Tuesday. I mourn your absence at the same time I celebrate the actual day of the move!

I hope it all goes smoothly, and that you find the right house when you get there.

Some folks have been consistently rewarded for decades for doing things that, a) impress and please their peers, but b) simultaneously hold them back from the levels at which they could impress and please their peers even more.

They are basically caught in a classic hill-climbing problem. To get to the higher hill, which they are not even sure is higher, they will have to go down into the valley, and they can't see their way clear to trying that.

Self-awareness is a superpower.

What an awful year for me, all these Trump cases.

I do not like to find myself rooting for the cops. They are not my friends, and they are not your friends, and they are not our friends.

My enemy's enemy is not, in fact, my friend. But I am prepared to cheer on my enemy's enemy from time to time.

One of my favorite joy projects: learning to tile the plane with polyominos of arbitrary order, using a backtracking algorithm, WHICH DOES NOT USE AN INTERNAL GRID AS PART OF ITS DATA STRUCTURE.

https://gfredericks.com/blog/99

Mama raised me pretty, a fact I should hope would be obvious, and not so much with the smart, a fact which is all too fucking obvious.

This algorithm blew my mind.

JFC. Thomas just denounced the 9-0 Brown v Board of Education ruing today.

Thomas's seat on the court was previously occupied by the great Thurgood Marshall, who argued that case before the court, before going on to become America's first Black justice.

Here's a question for a select few of you:

Have you ever had a really great psychopharmacologist?

I have had many health issues, and suffered from horrifically debilitating depression from at least age 25 to age 55 -- diagnosed, medicated, therapped, all that -- and have had many psychiatrists who were drug specialists.

In that time, I only had 1 guy who tried really hard but wasn't quite it, and 1 guy who was stunningly good at understanding my situation and supporting me through it.

For someone who's had 3 nights in a row of less than 5 hours of sleep, and am entirely able to go to bed and sleep as much as I want tonight, I sure am up awful late.

I can assure you it's not stamina. It's just endlessly breaking sleep cycles, a) in order to collaborate with the people I need to collaborate with, and b) in order to live with people who are strictly day-ist in outlook and noise-making.

A president or prime minister's helicopter or plane going down is almost a stock element in spy thrillers.

Iran is not a friendly country to my own, but my heart goes out, just the same.

As an aside, I marvel, that humans think we're so very high-tech and ultra-capable, and there are still places on the land that we just can't get to, when the weather acts.

Rescuers have reached the site, now, ~24 hours later, and Red Crescent says there are no signs of life.
