@dweebish @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics I think Dentists have a more solid basis for comparison, cause they see a whole lotta people with the same kind of pain. Conversely, the pain scales used by MDs are full of imperical flaws and have been shown to be regularly filtered through the Dr's personal biases to the detriment of marginalized patients

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic @actuallyautistics I grew up believing that my own ability to come to accurate conclusions about the world was completely broken. Just because I was trained from birth to accept church teachings as true above my own sense of reason. I remember several times that I saw incongruity between what I saw and what I was told and reacted like "oh wow, I'm way off, I'm glad I have access to the right answers".
Now I'm an adult with little confidence in my worldview

Is there value in a formal diagnosis? As far as I've been able to find, there's no treatment, there's nothing that will change the way my brain works. It seems like it's just getting a (fairly subjective) stamp of approval. And my GP is sort of an asshat, I won't even talk to him about sleep issues, I certainly wouldn't bring up something like this. Are there benefits I haven't found?

@devxvda @Cleopatra @sentient_water @ScottSoCal @f1337 @actuallyautistic I'm pretty lucky that my family are almost all undiagnosed neurodivergents, and the type of nerds who like to dig into research. So we've kind of all been going through this process of discovery together in a way. I think my little sister is the only neurotypical in my immediate family, and her response when I suggested I might be autistic was basically "yeah, that tracks"

@nellie_m @devxvda @Cleopatra @sentient_water @ScottSoCal @actuallyautistic @joshsusser yikes... I've seen some of her physics content, and while she seemed to be fairly solid on her subject matter (in physics) I always found something about her demeanor off-putting....
Now I know why; she does the thing where (some) scientists try to interpret psychology and social sciences the same way they would hard science, which seems to lead inevitably to eugenics apologia somehow

Since discovering I'm @actuallyautistic I've been musing on how not knowing this has caused many of the social ails I suffer from. Today I was thinking back to how I learned to change the way I converse because people always seemed to find me disagreeable. I've realized it's because I think in systems, so when someone tells me about something, my instincts lead me to analyse why it's a thing. But allistic's don't think in systems, they can learn systems, but they don't see them like I do 1/2
