I'm a just a small town AAA graphics programmer in Chicago. I worked on Gears 5 and Gears Tactics. My work is secret, but my personal projects are not.

I like to post about my personal research, various side projects, and I like to think out loud a lot. Expect weird humor, esoteric ramblings, and occasionally also art I made out of math. I like implicit surface modeling the normal amount. Amateur spoonie. 🏳️‍⚧️

Curses are just blessings with caveats.

I made a metronome tonight by using the rr intervals reported by my heart rate monitor as the tempo. It's not a very good metronome though.

@GabeMoralesVR it doesn't seem to have much of an effect tbh, but I have it running with a bit of a delay because of how the bluetooth buffering works

My ISP doesn't believe in "pager duty" or "uptime", so sometimes the internet just goes down in the middle of the night. I like to think that what happens every morning is Bob comes into the office, power cycles the office Linksys, and then the internet for half of Chicago comes back on again. When the internet goes down for multiple days it is because Bob is out sick.

Madarame: my hundreds of copies of "Sayuri" are not plagiarism, they're all original works that are in conversation with the original "Sayuri"

The great contradiction* I keep tripping over when I try to be more mindful about practicing systems thinking is that individual responsibility isn't a good model of systemic change, but also systems are comprised of individuals and do not change without individual action.

(*Not actually a contradiction, just seems like it at first glance.)

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@xgranade I think the reason a lot of individual responsibility efforts fall apart (besides when the causes or primary causes of a problem aren't individual decisions) is because they mostly seek to get random people to do something more or less in isolation of one another rather than approaching the solution as a collective effort that needs to be organized directly

aeva,
@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@xgranade or worse, if the individual solution is actually easy you can end up convincing the people who would come together for a real collective solution that they've already solved the problem and just stop there.

For example, as a kid I learned in school that you need to cut those horrible plastic soda packaging rings or animals will die, but some 30 years later that individualist solution seems to still be the dominant one. Feels bad.

@aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@xgranade incidentally this is why companies stamp recycling logos onto plastic packaging that isn't actually recyclable

you ever think about how the standard cartoon bomb (a large blue or black sphere with a big fuse coming out the top) is essentially the "save icon" of destruction, because 1) it's symbolic meaning is widely understood, and 2) it's an anachronism that is widely recognized only for its symbolic meaning as its real life counterpart is long obsolete?
