It's raining and I can't listen to rain without thinking about how in some movies they use the sound of frying bacon in place of the sound of rain

Looking out through my screen window at the tops of some trees while rain pours down

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@JenMsft LOL. How bizarre. Why? I would have thought the sound of falling rain would be one of the easiest things to authentically record/reproduce.

What fresh hell is this? it seems as a screen reader user, I am now barred from accessing Amazon on a new browser. It's prompting me to fill a visual CAPTCHA with no accessible alternatives on offer. Come on Amazon! Of all companies you should know better. This is a shameful disgrace! Do Better !!! #amazon #a11y

Remember that Spring cleaning I did a few weeks ago? I threw out a bunch of old tech, including a number of USB A printer cables. A firmware upgrade was just released for a DAC I have that's several years old. Guess what kind of cable I need to perform the upgrade? Guess what I have coming overnight from Amazon? Ugg! Apparently, no good deed goes un punished, as they say, sigh ...

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate typing with a TV remote? It could be any remote and any OS. I just find it tedious. You can’t even touch type. You have to scroll letter by letter. If you want to search for a long title or something, that's just plain inefficient. Look me in the eye and tell me I’m wrong. Google assistant decided to lose its hearing earlier right about the time I wanted to watch something.

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@evilcookies98 This doesn't work on all TVs but at least on some, if you have a USB keyboard, or even better, a wireless USB keyboard, you can plug that into your TV's USB port and you're immediately able to start using it. At least, that's the case on my Fire TVs. I would imagine it should work on others as well.

just reached into the junk drawer of a desk in my bedroom. The first three random things I found were: A lightning to VGA adapter, a 2 gig PCMCIA Micro drive, and an RJ11 male to two female splitter. Well then, something tells me it's time to do a bit of Spring cleaning ...

OK, this is a walkthrough of the weird VNC thing uses for connecting accounts. Again, I'm not saying there is anything necessarily wrong with doing this. I am saying there are way better ways to do this. And the clipboard button workaround is very funny.

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl Interesting, thanks for sharing. I was getting pretty excited about this device but now I'm coming back to earth. General functionality issues aside, This VNC implementation poses significant issues for those of us using screen readers who might want to configure the thing.

releases WebTunnel, a new type of Tor bridge that mimics HTTPS traffic to help users bypass by hiding connections in plain sight.

@ppatel Did you notice the title of this article after you open the UrL? It actually made me LOL: "Tor’s new WebTunnel bridges mimic ". Hmm, I've gotta wonder just exactly how one might manage to bridge a mimic?

I get it. Scammers, security ... But bottom line is it took me 10 minutes to figure out and complete a process that a few years ago would have taken me less than a minute to perform.

I just set up a filter in Gmail to forward all email from a specific sender to a different email address. The process was: 1. log into Gmail, complete 2FA. 2. Try to set up filter, can't forward because need to add a forwarding address first. 3. Add forwarding address, complete 2FA. 4. Click confirmation link at forwarded email address. 5. Create filter, set forwarding to new address. 6. Complete one more 2FA for good measure to acknowledge forwarding. Gah!

So, those of you owning Lenovo laptops and who have somewhat recently purchased them, any recommendations for a model? I'm looking for a high-end laptop. I'm not in a hurry; I suspect I'll making the purchase before June. The question is whether I should stick to the T series or go to the X1 series?

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@ppatel I haven't bought one in a few years so can't comment as to specific current models. As for X verses T, it may sound obvious, but how important is portability to you? If portability is of the upmost importance, then X1. But the T series will likely have a few more ports, in particular, some of the T series come with ethernet.

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@ppatel I have a T460 and a 2019 X1 Carbon. The X1 is definitely lighter and you do feel the difference when you pick it up. That said, the lightness is nice, not life changing. How much will you use the video card? if you'll only be using it for specific applications, maybe consider an external GPU. Any laptop that supports thunderbolt 4 should handle an external GPU just fine, and that would give you the energy savings of the Intel graphics when on the road.

Latest example of unintended screen reader humor. I just unlocked my iPhone. Voiceover started to read part of the time, and then interrupted itself with the name of the item currently in focus. What came out was "two face time". Hmm. What would that even be? Perhaps the time of day when you start gossiping about your friends, giving away all their deepest darkest secrets? :P

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@KaraLG84 I had one once where a program popped a toast notification message. The last part of the message said, "If you no longer wish to receive this message, then you can disable it in settings". However, my screen reader didn't read the whole notification and truncated the last part of that message. What I heard was, " if you no longer wish to receive this message, then you can die ..."

I wonder if anyone else has experienced the following scenario, and has a fix? I'll often Airplay something from my iPhone to a device like a Sonos speaker or homepod. After a time, I'll pause what I'm listening to, and then want to come back to it maybe 5 or 10 minutes later. But by then, the Airplay link has already timed out, and I have to establish the connection again. Any way to increase this timeout?

This sentence from the Debian documentation always makes me grin. Talk about a brain breaker: "Alternatively, you could use the testing image of the debian-installer, but note that the testing installer is more for testing the installer than for installing testing".

You may have seen articles about how ChatGPT went off the rails yesterday, with examples of the types of responses it was giving. Sadly, most articles I saw provided images of these chats with no usable alt text - go figure. Fortunately though, The crew at TWIT read a number of examples outloud during a podcast. Hearing people read these aloud while trying not to laugh is funnier than just reading them anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nz47dqjQxME

@Vivaldi Hey folks, just a quick heads up, I was going to use your browser while recording my next video but I can’t because I can’t get my screen reader to read the page (unlike how it can on Firefox and even in Chrome). Likely it’s the issues presented here: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/60027/vivaldi-browser-screen-reader-accessibility

Would love to use it but I can’t until it works with screen readers.

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@aral @Vivaldi I've also been playing with Vivaldi and so far, I have just one pet peeve. If I'm in the browser and press control+l, my screen reader doesn't automatically put me in forms/focus mode, so entering a URL requires an additional keystroke. Curious if you've found any workaround for that?

alpuzz,
@alpuzz@mastodon.social avatar

@Vivaldi Thanks for the response! I've checked those settings and unless I'm missing something, still no change. I'm not a developer, but in non technical terms, it seems that there is something slightly programatically different about Vivaldi's address bar than the address bar in other Chromeum browsers. This is a minor issue but it does interrupt my normal workflow. Is there somewhere I could open a ddiscussion on it?

If you know anyone who works in accessibility for any of the popular brokerage firms, please share the following feedback. related to options trading on all the major platforms has become a hot mess over the past few years. As a screen reader user, I can't find a single platform where I can easily filter an options chain, understand the greeks, an option's volatility, etc. Would be happy to offer more specifics to anyone interested.
