@daringfireball I find betting on culture a better predictor of success. OpenAI sounds like Google in the early years: a massive concentration of highly motivated talent with autonomy. Google increasingly feels like it’s run by McKinsey. Layoffs, outsourcing to cheaper countries, shutting down products endlessly.
Google could save itself, but I can’t see how it would do it without unfucking search and impacting quarterly profits. A bold company would do that. I don’t think that is Google.
Remember some of the hot-button issues in tech over the last decade? People angry over the use of the word "passion". The merits of "craftsmanship". Whether the "10x developer" is a myth.

Having tried to write about some of this stuff before (but not nearly as profoundly), I know how much care has to go into articulating these thoughts without judgment or condescension.
