  • repeat the “Don’t sweat it.”
  • Ubuntu is a perfectly fine starting point (the other “beginner distro” that’s commonly recommended is LinuxMint)
  • »AFTER« you become comfortable with what you have:
    • try familiarizing yourself with the command line
    • get overwhelmed with all the distro choices available
      • get bitten by the distro-hopping bug (“Gotta try them all!”)
        • and then try Distrobox (“ALL the distros at once!”)
  • »THEN« take a look at immutable distros
    • “immutable distro” is a catch-all term that embraces several concepts
      • immutable – the root filesystem is set to read-only – makes it harder to mess up your system
      • declarative – your hardware and packages and configs are declared in a master configuration file
      • atomic / transactional – updates are checked as they’re applied, if it fails, it gets rolled back to a previous “safe state”
      • container / sandbox – ex. Flatpak or Docker or OCI – apps are isolated in their own sandbox and not allowed to mess up anything else

A cool idea for a nautical campaign - a faction of emergency response pirates (sociale.network)

I found this story on Mastodon, about a maritime shipping disaster and the first-on-the-scene, questionably-legitimate emergency responders who rescue crew, contain the ecological impacts, and restore infrastructure damaged by a megafreighter crash before the official response can get into gear. And who take a bunch of loot when...

What are some good Winter Hardened and Aromatic Plants to put outside my Bedroom window?

I got quite a large Bedroom Window that I like to keep open during the Night and I thought it would lend itself super nicely for some Strong and Nicely smelling aromatic plants just outside it, so that by proxy the room itself always has that lovely plant flavour....

  • you pay the content creator by buying their content, not by browsing ads on their site – ads are a really annoying tip jar being waved in your face when you’re trying to hand money to the cash register
  • advertisers have been given plenty of warning to behave themselves and they refuse, they are parasitic leeches bleeding both creator and purchaser
  • adblockers are the effect, not the cause
    • original websites were ad free
    • banner ads were added and we tolerated them
    • advertisers then added in distracting flashing effects, loud audio cues, broke security with Flash, broke accessibility
    • adblockers invented
    • advertisers shed crocodile tears and pretend to be contrite
    • advertisers start pushing tracking, malware, phishing, crypto-miners
    • adblockers are now as important as antivirus for the safety of your computer/tablet/phone
