ATT rep was marking my road for fiber today!!!!!

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@ironicbadger AT&Ts reps keep coming to my door every month or two to try and sell me fiber, but I'm in the SF Bay Area and have Sonic which is faster (10Gbps) for cheaper. For some reason they keep trying.

@ironicbadger I just listened to the latest Self-Hosted where you spoke about VPS providers. Some of the providers on LowEndTalk are legit companies!

I'd recommend taking a look at GreenCloudVPS https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/budget-kvm-sale and HostHatch https://hosthatch.com/products. Both have fantastic Black Friday sales too. I've got a VPS with 16GB RAM for $60/year.

RackNerd is decent too https://lowendtalk.com/discussion/191501/real-deals-here-win-big-with-thousands-in-prizes-racknerds-new-year-offers-new-year-2024/p1

@ironicbadger A lot of the good VPS providers also let you upload an ISO and connect via VNC to install the OS (HostHatch allows this, not sure about the others). A lot nicer than Hetzner's thing.

If the thermostat in your Hilton looks like this and doesn’t do jack shit, it’s because it’s configured to only run when its extremely faulty presence sensor detects you doing light aerobics in your room - it’s easy to fix though!
Remove the cover screw with a Philips head
Hit the CONFIG button and switch modes with the F/C button until you hit something like “E-5” which is Bullshit Mode
Flip it down to E-0 to disable the presence sensor
Hit on/off to save then turn it back on!

dan,

@taber That document says it detects occupancy, but I'm 99% sure the thermostat would only have a basic PIR sensor, which just tracks motion, not occupancy. Misleading documentation!

It's perfectly reasonable to buy a $25 thermostat and then spend hours figuring out how to bodge an ESP onto it rather than buying a $150 "smart" thermostat that's going to demand cloud access, right?

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@mjg59 Ecobee allows local access via HomeKit. You don't actually need any Apple devices to use its HomeKit integration; Home Assistant implements the HomeKit protocol and can natively communicate with HomeKit devices.

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@mjg59 the HomeKit one or the Ecobee one?

It’s a great example of how much power Apple wields with the App Store that they mandate product design such as every social app must have a block user feature.

Government regulations are onerous but none are as onerous and as able to shift your entire business like the PM who drafts the rules for the App Store.

Anyway, Elon likely can’t remove the block feature from Twitter/X.

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@thisismissem @carnage4life Yeah, that's the way I interpret it as well.

Can you trademark the letter X (or any single letter)?

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@schizanon @iansu As far as I know, the USPTO doesn't really like them and is less likely to approve them these days.

No, you probably don't need a VPN.

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@lauren I use one to view my security cameras when away from home. I don't trust anything security-related that's directly exposed to the internet. The cameras are on their own separate VLAN that's isolated from everything except my Blue Iris server.

Wheezing with laughter at Zuckerberg's inevitable pivot to AI and his attempt to pretend that's not what he's doing. "We have not stopped focusing on the metaverse, we were focused on AI the whole time" is literally what he's trying to go with, somebody come get your boy.

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@seldo AI has been a focus for a long time though? Like I don't think he's wrong.

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@seldo In a company with 100,000 employees, I'd say it's completely reasonable to have more than one focus. That many people won't be all working on exactly the same thing.

Meta AI has released a bunch of research papers and code under fairly permissive licenses... probably more than most of the other "big tech" companies. DINOv2 was just released two weeks ago for example: https://github.com/facebookresearch/dinov2

You don't need no adblocker on Mastodon (or pretty much any fediverse product) because there's no ads.

And you don't need to block trackers or analytics or worry about information about you being sent to third parties.

If you check your adblocker you'll see 0 things. If you check for trackers for the usual suspects: Google, Facebook, etc, which are nearly ubiquitous on the web, you will not find them here at all.

Do you have any idea how rare that is nowadays, especially on a social media platform?

dan,
@dan@d.sb avatar

@oliphant individual servers could add their own trackers though (at least in the web UI), or inject ads into feeds. There's no guarantee that no servers would ever do that, or that a server is running an unmodified version of Mastodon.
