Since the TikTok ban became a thing, there’s a growing category of news stories that are simply “This popular US app is made in China.”

The combination of fear mongering and pointing out Chinese founders is a subtle mainstreaming of xenophobia in tech reporting.

Ikea is looking to hire ten people at £13.15 / €14.80 an hour to run its virtual store in Roblox which mimics a physical store where people can buy furniture and interact with employees.

They hope the virtual store encourages kids to want to work at Ikea

Yesterday I made a joke about EU regulators racing to start antitrust investigations of Nvidia after it hit $3T market cap.

It turns out the DOJ & FTC are investigating all 3 of the top companies in the AI ecosystem for being too dominant which just seems weird.

Investigating Nvidia or OpenAI for being too dominant in AI makes it seem like these antitrust investigations are about punishing success. Breaking up Nvidia or OpenAI sounds absurd especially when the industry is fairly nascent

Microsoft talked up the privacy aspect of its Recall feature by saying all the data is stored locally on your device.

Sadly it didn’t pay as much attention to security as the data is stored in plaintext. So a hacker tool (TotalRecall) now exists to query the screenshots it takes. It is quite shocking to me that Microsoft built a feature that takes regular screenshots of your desktop and then didn’t encrypt the local database it’s stored in. 😬

This reminds we of the belief that no code tools like Airtable & Zapier make developers obsolete.

In reality no code tools compete with freelance developers from Upwork for small projects not in-house development teams. Even then lack of a good story for debugging & testing hurt

EU antitrust regulators on hearing Nvidia is now bigger than Apple and they don't have any active antitrust investigations or pending fines to hit them with.

I love that tech companies are leaning into the positioning that LLMs as virtual employees which definitely doesn’t contribute to the perception companies can fire people and replace them with AI today.

I’m sure there will be no negative repercussions of this. 🙃

The problem with OpenAI since ChatGPT launched is that its behavior is not consistent with a research lab that’s worried it might accidentally build Skynet or Ultron. It acted like a startup.

That the employees it hired under that premise are now loudly quitting is unsurprising.

This question is kind of silly to ask in a country that’s close to electing a president who’s been found guilty of fraud, rape and falsifying documents. And that’s just within the last year.

OpenAI is going through a similar problem Google has been going through for years.

You hire a bunch of engineers and sell them on a mission but then it turns out their principles get in the way of the company making money so they feel betrayed.

Then you start firing them.

GPUs are a scarce resource and if you run multiple companies that are all using AI then you’ll have to play favorites.

Matt Levine had a newsletter on the topic of Musk’s investors now having to guess which company he’ll focus on. Looks like Tesla lost this round.

This is another tone deaf AI pitch from a tech CEO. A valuable feature for workers would be intelligent summaries of meetings you didn’t attend.

A deepfake me that can attend my Zoom calls and make decisions is at best hype and at worst insulting to other meeting attendees.

I’ll make him a deal. I’ll use this tech when Zoom’s CEO uses this tech to attend Zoom calls for earnings reports and his leadership meetings so he can spend more time with his family.

The family analogy breaks down fairly quickly in today’s tech world. You aren’t disowning family members to keep your stock price high.

After Pixar’s layoffs, the other shoe has dropped and Disney is revamping they make movies. They will move away from unique personal stories from their directors lives like Luca and Turning Red.

Instead they will focus on sequels like this summer’s Inside Out 2.

Finding Nemo and The Incredibles are the candidates most likely to be future sequels. They are also going to monitor the performance of their Inside Out spinoff on Disney+ to decide if they’ll keep making shows.

Creativity is done now

I saw this afternoon and it reminded me a lot of Rogue One. A prequel that is itself a great movie which while not being as great as the original comes quite close in various ways.

I’m honestly shocked this isn’t doing well at the box office.

Ads are the most obvious form of enshitification of the Amazon experience and returns is a close second. Long gone are the days of simple, no questions asked returns.

Given 1 out of 7 retail goods purchased in the US are returned, it’s proven unsustainable to make it easy to do.

Making it harder to return things is simply good business for a retailer.

On a related note, I’ve had Amazon itself notify me items were not delivered but then make it hard to then file for a refund or a re-delivery.
