When people say "why don't you move to lower cost of living states" you show them this:

People are being charged with felonies in Ohio for wearing masks. There is a bill to expand involuntary psychiatric admission requirements. You can assume where this is going for people who are still covid cautious and who do not look like a friend of the police or cis people.

UAW sadly didnt win the Mercedes Benz unionization drive but it was very narrow! Only fell shot by ~600 votes

"Workers at the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International plant in Vance, Alabama came up short in their first union election on Friday, May 17, with 2,045 votes to join the United Auto Workers and 2,642 against. "

I am so happy I got to Scrap when they announced they have a lot of frames and I immediately found the perfect identical 15 frames for photos & art work I have long wanted to frame.

I also cut myself on the very sharp tape measure that they were selling for $1 and this is where the bandaid I put in my purse – so I don't have to embarrass myself with my clumsiness in public again – came in handy.

A watercolor I made while I was in Singapore in the late 2000s which is the only painting from that time that seems to have survived, now framed!

Interestingly reading about China's EV "innovations" it feels as though they are trapped in the mindset of pleasing the white people – big full OLED screens, fancy interiors that Cheeto would love instead of doing stuff that would actually be useful to the consumers.

Also thought of this given how Buicks were apparently popular in China

divya,
@divya@sfba.social avatar

I am not disparaging anyone but I feel the same about India's "innovations". It feels so alien to what the context is.

divya,
@divya@sfba.social avatar

I am not sure this is just Asian but I notice it especially in Asian contexts because it feels so wildly out of place to me.

Tokyo's whole neon sign evolution was inspired by New York

"During and after World War II, neon signs gradually became a popular form of advertising in the country and at the very end of 1957, the Totsuko company erected a huge neon billboard modeled after New York City's famous billboards in Sukiyabashi, which is located in Tokyo's Ginza shopping district. The switching-on of the lights on this billboard was a nationally-televised event, and when the lights came on, the new name of Totsuko was revealed to the world: Sony."

Official history from Sony.com

"Totsuko had its site. The sign was next. First Totsuko studied Morita's home movies of the neon lights and billboards of Broadway. Each was striking in its own way: the famous Camel sign with its smoker puffing out perfect smoke rings; Pepsi Cola's showpiece with its hundreds of thousands of lights; and Admiral TV's news flashes, to name a few. Resolving to match these in splendor, the company commissioned designs from four leading neon sign makers in Japan."

As someone who plays video games and who also thinks about investing, I’ve long found memestock culture fascinating.. in a toe-curling kind of way. (Seriously do not go to /r/BBBY unless you want to see delusional people believe they’re going to become billionaires from hoarding stocks of a bankrupt business)

Someone here recommended this video and it made so much sense. Basically these folks believe it’s all a video game. You gotta grind to get rich.
