Feminist org in Singapore is looking for volunteers who can speak and transcribe Vietnamese.

They’re doing a study on coercive control. Singapore has a large trans-national marriage rate, largely between citizen men and non-citizen wives from countries like Vietnam.

Mila is turning 18 and has severe arthritis. She can’t sleep on our heads upstairs in the bed anymore (ramps don’t help, due to the layout of our apartment). A few nights a week I pull out a mattress and sleep with her downstairs. And when I don’t.. she starts screaming at 6am until I come down and get sat on. I love her so much

I found this article irritating. Singaporean small country insecurity and exceptionalism is still deeply Western-centric. It’s all look at us, we are better / different

LinkedIn types are celebrating it and saying ‘Singapore is better because we don’t have culture wars/ identity politics’

Well that’s different from ‘not being allowed to have identity politics’, or ‘identities’, but I find it nauseating that dominant group people think this is great

I don’t think anyone needs lessons on anything from Singapore. Literally nowhere else is a microscopic city state island nation with a deep port. LA is 1.82x bigger than us. A Taiwanese minister once called Singapore ‘a very deeply irritating booger’ (more melodic in our shared Hokkien: pee sai). Now that’s the Singapore think piece I want to read

@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

Don’t get me wrong, Singapore is wonderful within some constraints. If you’re fine with boundaries and limits, and your identity gives you some privileges. However I would not recommend it to anyone who is any type of outside the box person. There’s a special type of soul crushing you can expect, one that I will take the rest of my life to unravel

Quite excited that I’ll get to spend time in India again soon. I’ve missed it so much. Will plan it out in more detail soon but so excited to see everyone again, and more importantly eat all the food again

Other people who live in humid climes and buy garlic powder in the large containers: how do you keep it from becoming a giant unusable mass. This is my second container since I moved here, I thought since the first was powder rather than granulated that was the problem, but the granulated does it too.

(Don't @ me about using garlic powder, it's one of the secrets to a great egg & cheese sandwich and I eat a lot of those, ok?)

I’ve received invites to almost every queer Asian activism thing in the Bay Area this summer, so I think I’m going to be extremely busy. I don’t have enough ‘gala clothes’ but I am also excited that I don’t need to conform to the feminine expectations of such events in straight spaces.

I also think going to these things is important for me so I stop feeling the doom and gloom of the ‘SF Asians are actually conservatives’ message I hear in the media. Have you seen the people I know??? Why doesn’t anyone write stories about how Asians in the Bay Area are radical progressives actually

skinnylatte,
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

@joshourisman oh yeah a lot of this stuff is east bay centered

@joshourisman I’m going to a queer AAPI gala in.. Hayward. Now that’s new.

The time has come to admit I don't have a good idea of what to use these jars of olive brine for and recover the space in my fridge.

I'm currently trying to convince myself to actually throw it out and not just consolidate to fewer jars.

It's ok to point and laugh at me over this.

The fun story of how I got this bike in the first place: I have alerts for Rivendell in Craigslist. Something popped up. I wrote. And then, JOE BREEZE replied. He said I could buy it from him.

So I got a super unique bike AND I got to meet Joe Breeze

More soy toots: when you buy soy sauce look at the ingredient list and label.

If it has ‘hydrolyzed soy protein’, it’ll be roughly the same quality as ‘cheap Chinese restaurant takeout soy sauce packets’. Soy sauce made from chemical processes. It doesn’t taste good to me and is usually amped up with sugar.

If it just says ‘soy beans’, and the label says ‘naturally brewed’ or ‘naturally fermented’ or ‘first draw soy sauce’ it will be pretty good.
