Surely a Labor government should be embarrassed by delivering a surplus, when that money could've been spent on raising unemployment benefits or on building state housing.

Budget 2024: Jim Chalmers lands the surplus double

(maybe paywalled) https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/9-3-billion-chalmers-lands-the-surplus-double-in-third-budget-20240513-p5jd6e.html

@timrichards The excuse is inflation. But yeah, surplus during a cost of living crisis is pretty embarrassing. Surely when you have the country’s best economists in your contacts you can figure out how to support financially struggling people without pushing up inflation.

I want to understand this, but I can’t grok more than the headline and the potential applications. Is anyone able to explain it to someone whose physics knowledge is Year 12 + Vertasium? Like, how do massless photons even have momentum?!

First day of Amber Electric taking smart control of our home battery and… hoo boy!

A screenshot from the Amber Electric app showing earnings of over $64 for exported energy in a single day.

I meet a lot of teams who believe they're doing Continuous Integration, but actually aren't. If you want to know if you're really doing CI, and are seeking better alternatives to Pull Request code reviews, here's my handy video guide.

@jasongorman Nice! Been having exactly this conversation at $newJob. One of the biggest issues is that companies who sell branches and pull requests have blog posts saying that CI involves branches and pull requests! 🤯
“Oh, it’s still continuous integration if your branches are short-lived!”
“If your branches are so short-lived that you’re integrating continuously, why do you need branches?”
“Um … “

If we switch a house from an electric hot water heater to a heat pump, we’ll save about 7.5kWh per day.

If we put that much energy into an EV, it’ll recharge it for about 45km of travel.

That’s more than the average car drives each day in Australia.

Upshot: Your hot water may use more energy than driving an EV would, the extra energy needed from the grid for EVs is not necessarily a step change, and the grid may be fine as-is if we reduce the use of inefficient electric appliances.

(REHW daily energy = ~10kWh, HPHW efficiency = ~400%, EV mileage = ~6km/kWh, average daily drive = ~35km)

@itsfoss I see a strong irony in a publication that’s literally all about FOSS saying someone else should fix this problem. If you want to see something fixed in a community-powered, open source project, why not roll up your sleeves and get to work on it?

Would anyone care to recommend a CO2 monitor I can prop up next to my desk to remind me when to ventilate?

Bonus marks if it's both powered and portable, so I can occasionally take it to meetings and opt out when things get too muggy. I don't care about recording numbers over time. UK purchase.

Q: it is I want to monitor, both for air quality and as a proxy for the fact that , right??

Me trying to explain modern development practices to normies:
Me: yeah, we don’t know how long it will take, or how much it will cost, tbh we don’t really know what we’re going to make. We need to figure that out. Get a feel for the people and the problem, make some stuff that seems useful and see how it goes.
Them: What kind of hippie bullshit is this???
Me: You should’ve seen the crap we made when we thought we knew what we were doing…
Them: Who would go along with this nonsense?
Me: … the people who had to deal with what we made before…?
Them: What part of this even partially resembles Engineering???
Me: so… the thing… that we’ll figure out is the thing we should make?
Them: yeah?
Me: Well, we’ll do that… But At Scale!
Them: what on earth does that even mean??? Gimme my money back!!!

@Patricia All software projects have unknown and moving requirements. The difference between waterfall and agile is whether you try to pretend that's not the case and then get upset when you realise it is, or just deal with the reality of a shifting goalpost from the start.

Responding to

Been wondering how to respond to climate change locally and as a human who is affected by it.

I'm listening for a practice or activity that could confirm to other locals that they're part of a group who support robust action to prevent large human-activity-caused climate change.

Looking for something that will help in the tiniest discernable way to shift me, and maybe others, away from by climate change.

What you got universe?

is INTER-GENERATIONAL THEFT.
Those companies which continue to produce fossil fuels and consume them without a plan for immediate and rapid transition are pushing trillions of $s of externalities onto future humans, so that their shareholders can be richer now.
