Decided to be very clear with rules of engagement with my posts and edited my profile

I'm having a few thoughts on social norms. I'm used to IRC and Usenet, where a channel or group is understood to be an open forum and, when people make a statement, it is seen as normal for anyone else, acquainted or not, to respond to it, even tangentially.

But on more social-network-style graph-based communications where the flow is determined by a follow edge between nodes or something like it, a lot of people find it disturbing or invasive to have strangers pop into their mentions to rebut, add, or jump off from their point.

I think this causes a lot of friction and expectation mismatches. I don't think either norm is wrong, though it is useful if people make it clear which one they're expecting.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm an IRC-type person. If I'm posting public or unlisted, I do not mind strangers to disagree with me, add their own twist, or give their own reaction. I will also respect the desire of graph people who don't want me to do that to them.

@modulux

I noticed more of the latter (social graph) on Twitter but a lot less on here. I'm kinda a bit of both... I expect strangers to comment on my public posts, I expect public posts to have the chance of being linked elsewhere, but when I am commenting on a stranger's post, sometimes I try to "knock on the door" first, by saying something like "Hi, i saw your post on my timeline/sorry for intruding in this conversation/etc." (not all the time, because I don't always remember to...), which I think can soften it a little. I also check profile and past interactions before I interact, sometimes.

It's hard to tell what type of behaviour people expect

(Maybe it'll be easier if people put it on their profile. I think I'll add that to mine after this)

@modulux

Also it may be due to a lot of bad experiences from random strangers replying in a very rude manner, replying without reading the original post/knowing the context, dismissing expertise, etc. in other social media platforms, which builds up this wariness

The thing about JoL is... It feels very cishet in ways idk how to explain, and it definitely starts with Love At First Sight which is a trope I do not enjoy (thankfully, it is more a gimmick to get main charac invested in the speed chess with all the other parties), but I mostly enjoy it for the humor, the randomness (I am waiting for the PowerPoint presentation in fantasy Ancient China, and the reveal that Wu shushu is actually a Robot [come on, he must be!])

It is a show that doesn't take itself too seriously and makes a lot of modern references (including having a gun in a box, and as mentioned, possibly a PowerPoint presentation)

Any fans watched wuxia ‘Heroes’ (2022)? Thoughts?

Viki is streaming it. Noticed it has my crush Liu Yu Ning AND Joseph Zeng in it. Plus Baron Chen as villain.

Director is same as the beautiful Farewell My Princess.

Based on a novel by Woon Swee Oan, the Hong Kong-based Malaysian Chinese poet and writer who also inspired series & film, The Four. The novel is about the nature of heroes.

Looks good but My Drama only gave it 7.9/10!

@AnnaAnthro ah. I skimmed through this show, but didn't properly watch it. Mostly because I like sworn brotherhood and tragedy. If you like that too, you'll probably enjoy it I think

I love that I can casually make chawanmushi in the instant pot like it’s NBD (really easy once you’ve done it a few times). It’s one of my favorite things to eat and I hate paying so much money for them at Japanese restaurants

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@skinnylatte I love justonecookbook~

And chawan mushi is great! (The good thing about making it is not being disappointed when U.S. JP restaurants don't have it... And the price, yes)

Out of curiosity I checked if there are official tl of my fav JP BL novels (based on their audio dramas) and while the answer is no, I did stumble upon this thread:

https://community.wanikani.com/t/flesh-blood-drama-cd-series-listening-club/59062

... Flesh & Blood for Japanese practice. 😂 (This is one of my favs. I own some of the bl audio dramas. It's also yes, probably the longest running bl audio drama series)

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

Now I'm wondering if the series has even finished. Last I left off, Kaito (the MC) has gone back to the future (his own time) in order to cure his tuberculosis. Meanwhile, his ML is in trouble (I forgot why? I think suspected spy?) and was just saved from torture. And there was Christopher Marlowe doing... Something

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

The last BL audio drama is Flesh & Blood 21:

I don't have that. I need to change that

due to a conversation about how none of mxtx's novels are actually a great place to start for a western fan with no familiarity with the genre, I'm now curious:

for those of you who have read more widely, what do you think would be the best wuxia or xianxia danmei for a western newbie reader, in terms of a cross section of plot comprehensibility / being engaging / english translation quality, etc?

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@soph_sol actually thinking about this a little more, it might help to watch at least one wuxia movie prior to reading because now the reader has visuals to go with it (might not help with some readers though)

So instead of a starter wuxia setting danmei, I'd say, watch something like Swordsman 2 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swordsman_II) or other wuxia movies.

geraineon,
@geraineon@sakurajima.social avatar

@soph_sol and that's for wuxia. For xianxia, I'd also recommend a gen movie, like Nezha or Jiang Ziya

Or maybe journey to the west to get a sense of things

I finished it! Extras and all!

Ah that was enjoyable. I liked all the side characters, and I love that they all had a personality, a shape, motivations for themselves and it's such a lived in world. There were parts where (might be due to edited MTL) I could not really picture in my head (and there were certainly name misattributions here and there) but overall, this edited MTL was readable. This one took a bit to get going and for me to get really invested (it was interesting from the get go though), but once it did, I was invested

Yan Qing is probably my fav. I'm so happy for him for where he ended up at (by just going with the flow and trusting his scheming sect master and senior disciple haha). My poor gullible bb
