I find no irony in that coding in the shadow of ChatGepetto requires an even larger commitment to testing and debugging, but those skills aren’t valued in our industry. Just ship it and get promoted or bail before you have to fix your mistakes.

It’s pretty bold to try and replace employees with volunteers…

    I’ve been binge-watching YouTube videos of “Karens” getting arrested by police (I used to watch COPS back in the day) and a few things jump out at me:

    1. these encounters are likely the most stressful thing ever for these folks
    2. most do not realize they live in a heavily-policed country due to very few past interactions with police
    3. mental health issues go across all races and income levels
    4. drug and alcohol use goes across all races and income levels

    Hey PHP Folks, question for you!

    Back in the early 2000s, I feel like there was two big PHP development methodologies.

    The "Yahoo! System" where they did all their front end in PHP, and had a lot of built in extensions to handle their business logic.

    The "Facebook System" that used PHP for everything.

    Is anyone still using the Yahoo! system? Do they talk about it much?

    grmpyprogrammer,
    @grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

    @preinheimer @mwop Other than Yahoo I only came across one company that used “extensions contain business logic” and it was run by old PHP contributor Ilia Alshanetsky.

    Was there ever a time when publicly-traded companies didn’t do stupid shit to juice their stock price rather than make good stuff and keep customers happy?

    For all the talk about how “small towns are friendlier” it sure does suck that one of my neighbours has a floor fan I bought via Amazon. No point in asking because they don’t really like me due to my non-obsessive behaviour over my lawn. Cutting the lawn once a week is not enough apparently.

    Courier says “package handed to resident” but Amazon has refunded me.

    grmpyprogrammer,
    @grmpyprogrammer@phpc.social avatar

    @sarah If I had to guess I would say they didn’t bother checking the address on the package, opened it, and figured someone else in the house ordered it. 🤷‍♂️

    I don't think I'll ever understand the kind of person who says "you MUST fight with me about technology minutia. And if you choose not to, I will block you forever." Like it's such a weird combination of principles.

    @polotek Just like there are many teachers who hate the students they teach, there are lots of programmers who hate the people who use the stuff they build

    In 2 minds about adding LLM re-phrasing suggestions to a custom filament field; because there are many good reasons not to use them. I agree with those reasons. Especially when generative stuff is used as a crutch.

    Great blog post about the half-assed way MLB is trying to convince newspaper sports editors that it is, in fact, good for the taxpayer to pay for things for billionaires https://www.fieldofschemes.com/2024/05/07/21407/rob-manfred-manfreds-his-little-manfreddy-heart-out-to-say-stadium-moneys-iz-gud/

    @MoiraEve I am not American and this happens far less and generates a much larger outcry up here in Canada when teams try it. The pushback in Kansas over the attempts of the Chiefs and Royals to get taxpayers to foot the bill for their next stadiums is encouraging.
