Made it to A Coruña, for the CSSWG face to face meetings. Who else is around?

(First step: laundry)

@mia, is this a thing, CSS WG meetings in Galicia?

Just moving into this province (further down south), I had thought little was going on here 😅 Awesome!

#HTML: There are several valid syntaxes for tags, like “<em/.../”, “<>”, or empty start tags.

j9t,
@j9t@mas.to avatar

(Interesting result!)

The answer is: Yes!

In this case, let’s look at “Understanding HTML and SGML”:

“The SGML declaration for HTML specifies SHORTTAG YES, which means that there are other valid syntaxes for tags, such as NET tags, <EM/.../; empty start tags, <>; and empty end tags, </>.”

However:

“Until support for these idioms is widely deployed, their use is strongly discouraged.”

I don’t think the meiert.com blogroll has ever been that long!

(That’s not everyone I follow, of course, so if you’re not in there, chances are I still follow your work :)

Contrast the attached screenshot of code for an index.html sample file with the minimal and valid alternative,

<!doctype html>
<title>My Website Home Page</title>
<h1>Welcome to my website</h1>
<p>Now hosted on Amazon S3!

But a few of you know that this is a thing of mine (and of everyone into minimal and valid HTML), so I [won’t use this as a teaser for anything 🙂].

j9t,
@j9t@mas.to avatar

@Schepp, no? Which ones would you omit while still keeping this sample valid?

j9t,
@j9t@mas.to avatar

@scrwd, yes, if immediately following the “title” element, it would be part of the document head.

Whether it would matter, I can’t tell (please share more?)—but it is reliable in a sense of not being dependent on optional markup.

I’m planning and preparing a new book, about rote learning HTML and CSS. (Will add the draft cover!)

Double question!

  1. Is “rote learning” clear?

  2. Would you be interested in such a book?

Cover draft!

j9t,
@j9t@mas.to avatar

@kagan, I’m still working on details of the format itself, but it’s likely going to be fairly simple and repetitive—exactly to enable and test learning HTML and CSS features this way.

There are good reasons why such a book might not be of interest, but could the price point tip the scale? (It would probably be fairly inexpensive, like $5–8.)

j9t,
@j9t@mas.to avatar

@sjorsrijsdam, yes, understandable :) It doesn’t seem to be a common expression, hence asking about it. Curious what the poll will show!

Thanks everyone who responded!

I don’t like that “rote learning” isn’t that clear, but I appreciate the interest in the book 🙇‍♂️

@jake4480, wondering about exactly what @brandonwrites describes, a mix of technical measures to safeguard ownership and diversifying platforms (including giving Kobo a go).

Thanks both of you for the responses, was weighing whether I should just “suck it up” or react more strongly to this incident.

@jake4480, fortunately I can still re-download the books! (Hundreds, but at least. I hope that was generally clear in the post.)

We Need to Talk More About Conformance, If We Want to Stop Fantasy HTML:

Conformant and valid HTML is the exception on websites and in apps, even though valid output is a sign of professional web development. Given how rarely the topic is being discussed these days, we benefit from raising more awareness for HTML conformance and validation.

All titles of the “Upgrade Your #HTML” ebook series are now available at a lower price! 🔻

(The previous price had essentially been dictated by one of the books’ platforms, which is now being worked around by donating the difference.)

If you purchased the latest title and find the new price fairer, reach out so that I can offer you another book, free of charge!

On frontenddogma.com, I had a “soft block” in place that I used not to attribute people I mistrust.

I’ve dropped that block.

It’s not that the mistrust went away, but I don’t feel like I need to “retaliate.” I much rather like to acknowledge that I could err in my judgment. I also believe that nothing improves if we all think “eye for an eye.”

To keep it short, the spirit matches what I wrote in “Reasons to Listen to Whom You Don’t Agree With”:
