I have been subscribed to ChatGPT for over a year and I’m finally about to cancel the subscription. It’s so bad, I don’t know if I’m just imagining it, but it has gotten absolutely useless.

It’s not like I only use it for programming (that part has gotten REALLY bad), but it’s also starting to fail at text summarization, another thing I used it for.

@davidbures slowly switching to my own instance of Llama3. Has some really cool integrations with Nova and VS Code for code completion. I’ll need to make some real app to use it outside of my home but still I’ve seen better results.

So...I successfully acquired a rewritable HDMI 2.1 dummy plug.

I rewrote its firmware to behave like a display with the native resolution of the 13" iPad Pro, including 120Hz refresh rate and 1,600 nits peak brightness for HDR.

Games that support the 4:3 aspect ratio now look incredible in Moonlight with HDR and no more black bars around them. 😎

@viticci you have a link to the plug? This would be perfect for my gaming vm I have on Proxmox.

I need some SwiftUI help. I am trying to recreate the text field and send button but can’t seem to find the best way to do it. I assumed doing .keyboard in the toolbar would be right but doesn’t work as I want. Anywhere I should look to do this?

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures No it was showing up fine but I need the textfield to always be shown even when the keyboard is dismissed.

What I would give for a base M1 Mini. These things are great transcode servers.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures yeah it’s wild. Mine has become my Plex and iOS build server so I need another machine to work on.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures yeah Texas. No that’s okay but thank you! I’m not in a rush to get one. I may just get a new MacBook and dock when needed. I haven’t decided yet.

@davidbures@mstdn.social avatar

Alright, this might require some advanced SwiftUI knowledge…

But can anyone tell me what Xcode wants me to do here? :neocat_sob:

Broken SwiftUI error

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures shot in the dark but I swear sometimes you have to do Text(“some text”) instead of just “some text”

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures Oh does it need to be CommandMenu(“placeholder”, content: {})?

james, to random
@james@nullio.net avatar

Follow up, where does everyone get such great looking app icons? I can’t art for shit so mine always look terrible.

Well boys, just booked my first flight ever. It will happen on Monday.

I’m kinda nervous 😅 I’m not afraid of dying on it, but I’m honestly only scared of…getting sick. That, to me, is a fate worse than death 😵‍💫

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures like puking in flight? I think you’ll be good. It’s pretty smooth. If you mean cold/flu I have very rarely become sick from traveling. I fly at least two times a year. Either way get a neck pillow.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures oh then your solid. Ship is far worse. Take off you get a bit of G force but mostly pushing you into the seat. Also bring a pack of gum. Helps with popping your ears.

Around 20% of Cork users have compiled the app themselves from source

The option to compile the app for free is something that separates Cork from other nominally paid apps, and highlights the advantages of source availability

Unfortunately, a lot of people keep breaking Cork's simple licensing by reselling or distributing precompiled versions without my permission. And they don't take their repos down when I ask nicely

If this keeps happening, I might have to close the source

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures I was going to try and open source my app too but this was one concern I had. Seems I may just close it to avoid the headache.

WOW adding async to my main three APIs I use in my Proxmox app made it so much faster loading the data in.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures Is this using async? That's my next adventure as well… 😬

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures Any guides you used that helped? I need to convert all my API calls.

james, to random
@james@nullio.net avatar

Completed some more UI stuff today. Still a work in progress. Need to learn more about async await. Loading all the data is on one thread and constantly uses 100% CPU. Especially with trying to load CPU usage RRD for the charts.

@davidbures my wife and I have been exploring leaving the US for this reason. Texas is very much road world.

@davidbures No not yet. Germany was pretty high up on our list though.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures Thanks for the suggestion! We really just want walkable cities and public transportation that doesn’t suck.

@davidbures Are you using multiple models in your SwiftData project? I am having issues with saving when I am trying to save data to two different models. I have @Environment(.modelContext) var context but having issues when saving. Have you run into this?

Just started a new small macOS project to practice SwiftData and Observation, and decided to spice it up a little.

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures I started a new project using swiftdata too! You find anything useful thus far as far as documentation goes?

james,
@james@nullio.net avatar

@davidbures Thank you! I am working on a Proxmox manager app seems like a good way to play with its API and use Swift Data. Little UI mockup:
