Does anyone know of a F/OSS tool (or even reasonably priced commercial... if it runs on Linux - yeah right) for manipulating extremely large, layered, bitmap/vector hybrid images, preferably with variable DPI per layer (i.e. ability to have layers not 1:1 pixel resolution with adjacent ones) rather than having to upsample an image to stack it with a higher res layer? Variable color depth per layer and ability to do tinted grayscale (vs needing RGB24 to display annotations in a single color per layer), plus ability to work with images in a streaming fashion from bulk storage vs loading the entire dataset into RAM at once, would be good too.

Related in no way whatsoever, I managed to get GIMP to use north of 100GB of RAM last night.

@azonenberg For viewing only, an openstreetmaps tile viewer would probably work without too much hassIe. I think the problem is really interesting, especially when raster operations get involved and the goal is to be closer to RAM speed than disk speed. Some ops like convolution filters map really easily to chunked processing, but others such as anything that uses an FFT get hairy fast.

@gsuberland Is this actually a phosphor that upconverts blue to UVA, or are they just trolling their customers into believing it is UVA by putting a faint red phosphor on blue LEDs?

@marble That is terrible UX. How is anyone supposed to figure out what that is intended to signify?! 🤪
