Welcome to today's thread - #CrossBorderRail South East Europe Day 06 04 Jun 2024 - Arrival of night train, Budapest - Pécs - Beli Manastir - Osijek - Zagreb
Crossing these borders:
Lanžhot 🇨🇿 - Brodské 🇸🇰
Štúrovo 🇸🇰 - Szob 🇭🇺
Beli Manastir 🇭🇷 - Magyarbóly 🇭🇺
@jon the one time I got motion sick on a train was a German built intercity from Zagreb to Split. Of course it didn't help that the air was recirculating from the smoking carriage behind ours.
Just seen 12 runs scored of a single ball. Never seen that before.
Bowler messed up a delivery and the ball bounced twice. That’s a no ball: 2 runs and a free hit.
The batter is still allowed to hit the no ball. He hit it for 4. Total of 6.
A no ball must be bowled again. And it’s a free hit which means the batter can’t be out directly from that ball (they can be run out). Anyway, the batter hit the free hit for 6.
For the first time since 1992 (when I was 12) I’m completely disinterested by the UK General Election.
Sunak and the Tories will lose, Labour in uninspiring, the Lib Dems weedy, Greens weak and SNP weakened, and Reform simply grim. And Brexit is the elephant none of them will touch.
As I’m still a UK citizen I will vote, but it’s with less determination than ever before.
@albertcardona@jon the problem is that the UK still uses first-past-the-post in single-member districts. The Greens were able to become a viable party in Germany because of proportional representation and coalition governments.
@patrick@jon Arles to York is not so bad, although the obvious routing with changes only in Paris and London (11h9m) only works if you leave at 06:43. DB even tells you to take the RER D from Gare de Lyon to Gare du Nord, although it doesn't know the timetable. Still, 2h26m should be adequate even with Eurostar checkin. 30m between St. Pancras and Kings Cross could be a little tight, but there are later trains to York. New York, otoh...
It's obvious that if I take a trip by train, rather than by car or plane, it is the green choice.
But modal share for rail is marginal, and decisions made by politicians and the industry are preventing the step change we need - due to the climate crisis
@jon you mention displacing FlixBus trips with more rail capacity; I would have liked to see Intercity bus services on that green comparison chart. Got to be better than autos and I suspect there are places where a direct bus beats a bad train connection (which is an infra problem). But I suspect there's a ceiling on how much travel could be absorbed by buses because fewer people are willing to sit on a bus than a train.
Version 1.2.0 brings some adaptions to game to avoid players getting stuck in the remote corners of Europe - and this needs some changes to the board as well, which has been redesigned in some places
@jon Finally got a chance to print it out. I don't have easy access to a printer larger than A3 (and that is b/w), so I'm trying to print the board on multiple sheets. It might be useful to have a version of the board as a 15-page A4 PDF. I produced my own with the unix command
@jon still having issues with the margins. Might just go get it poster printed at a print shop. There isn't a board v 1.3 about to come out or anything, is there?
This behaviour is life-threatening and disgusting.
This morning on our school street (photo left on an ordinary day), a motorist thought it was unacceptable that he was not allowed to drive into the street... a street where children and parents were walking and cycling to school.
After some yelling, the driver accelerated and drove straight past the crowd barriers into the school street... onto a metal pole.
I hope the driver does not get off with a simple fine.
@Virginicus in terms of devious "what a bastard" evil, Glaurung gives Sauron a run for his money, and even manages to complete his psychological demolition of two characters after being mortally wounded. But I guess "sexy dragon" fan art is a whole different genre.
