The problem is that Nvidia pulls proprietary nonsense out of their ass, specifically to say “AMD can’t do [blank]!”

Physics. Sound. Compute. Hair. Raytracing. Upscaling. And on and on and on, aggressively poised to be incompatible. CUDA is fifteen years old and Nvidia still threatens anyone who tries cross-compiling it to SPIR-V or OpenCL.

This is anti-competitive behavior from a blatant monopoly. They have supermajority market share - they are abusing it. The right answer is to shatter this corporation.

AMD’s compute capabilities are fine. CUDA is an artificially restricted API that is not permitted to recompile into anything else.

Nvidia essentially forces AMD to clone whatever bullshit they do next, or else Nvidia will fixate on it and crow about how AMD can’t do [blank]. It’s a pattern of anticompetitive behavior. It only works because Nvidia has such a dominant market share… and it is a method to preserve and deepen that divide. They do not want fair comparisons between their hardware and AMD’s, and they actively prevent software compatibility. This has been going on so long that I used to type this up about nVidia and ATI.

Re-reading it now, he also insists the USSR saved Poland… y’know… after they split it in half. If people want to celebrate the Soviets’ role in defeating Hitler, by all means shout it from the rooftops, but nobody got out of World War 2 completely innocent.

I just blocked that guy instead of getting into it - even though I apparently fucking adore getting into it - specifically because of past moderation on this instance. I will bicker and have it out with people for days, when I feel a topic is important, and continue having it out with the mods themselves if they want to intervene, and even I have simply written off most of this instance as an exclusion zone. Too many broadly-agreeable spaces are policed to enforce very specific opinions about really fucked-up topics.

You are mocking people’s honest experiences of this instance. Its reputation is not some conspiracy. New users incidentally mention obvious problems with certain geopolitically important countries, get their comments erased or maybe eat a ban, and are told by old users - ‘yeah, that’ll happen.’

From developers’ perspective, platforms are an obstacle. PC is the least-onerous middleman between them and customers. (And Steam still takes an entire third of their revenue.) The push for games to just work on whatever, for everyone, was already present by the PS2 era, and by the PS3 era it nearly killed the PS3. Sony’s wacky-but-powerful hardware counted for fuck-all to devs who wanted a PC release and and Xbox port or vice-versa. Sony only recovered by providing a generic API and getting some games that worked basically how they worked on every other machine.

Everything is a computer now. The PS5 and Xbox whateveritscalled are nearly-identical AMD laptops. Nintendo’s money-printing handheld is an Android tablet by Nvidia. There is no special sauce anymore. Microsoft is fully prepared for this, since the Xbox was always an effort to PC-ify the console market, but Sony is struggling to recognize the war is over. Helldivers showed them how much money they could make being just a PC publisher, and it scared the shit out of them. They’re not okay. Their entire business model is rooted in being a platform, when consumers are sick and tired of dealing with platforms.

We just want to game.
