Ok, someone smarter than me please weigh in-

I have an OLED TV hooked to a 4K AppleTV over HDMI. The CEC control works flawlessly. I also have a Sonos soundbar hooked to the TV over Optical.

Somehow the AppleTV remote knows to control volume over IR to the soundbar.

How does this work? Is there an optical “handshake” like HDMI? Is that how the AppleTV figures out there’s an optical soundbar on the TV? Or is it just assuming because it found the Sonos on the WiFi?

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimmylittle from what I can tell I think the Apple TV basically just yells “volume up” in every known manufacturer’s IR language, because I’ve never had to program it to a specific TV like I used to have to program the cable box remote.

So that explains the sound bar, and what’s left I guess is your TV ignoring its own volume up commands because it does know it has an optical connection

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimmylittle yeah that’s at least nicer than my parent’s TV which displays a FULL LINE of text which says “TV speakers are disabled when external speakers are connected” 🙄

nickfoster,

@jimmylittle this is dumb that you can’t, because you can literally just write in any text field in iOS and it will transcribe it for you

@tashen it’s been really nice, the content feels different from my Mastodon feed and that’s made it feel more fresh I think? It’s not better content, just different. Variety!

I was onboard with toots at first but over time it just feels way better to call them posts, I dunno 😂
Always funny when the ATP hosts earnestly call them toots, unless they’re just saying it ironically 😅

@tashen yeah I’m pretty much in the same boat, I’m pretty sure the ATP guys are being serious but it still makes me giggle every time

If you are on Ivory’s TestFlight, you should be able to try out our brand new share sheet on iOS and Mac. It's not perfect, but should be a huge improvement! Give it a try and let us know what you think.

You can access it by going to a page in your browser (or an image in your photo library), hitting the share icon, and then choosing Ivory's icon from the list.

Hey internet friends 🤗 I have a big announcement to make and this time it doesn't have anything to do with apps 🤓

Last month, our daughter was born and it is so incredible and wonderful to have her in the family now. I haven't been very active here nor done any work recently, as my wife and I were busy getting to know the little one and enjoying quality time to bond as a young family 🧑‍🧑‍🧒 🥰

PS: As many of you know I am very fond of dad jokes, so now I am officially entitled to make ‘em 😜

nickfoster,

@manuel congrats!! I hope you and your wife find a wonderful new normal together 🙏🏻

I don’t know what happened yesterday with AppleID security, but things went sideways fast. I had to reset my AppleID password (which I should have done years ago - hadn’t changed since 2008 🙃).

One thing I appreciate but don't understand is the "enter your passcode from another device" security confirmation. I get that this is a great two-factor way to prove you at least know a lot about the account, but how does it work?

How does Apple know what my VisionPro passcode is from my Mac? Anyone?

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar

@jimmylittle my understanding is that this is what Apple uses to encrypt your secret keys for all the things that are E2EE. Rather than trying to teach users what it means to have a private key that they have to make sure to never lose (but also don’t reuse it anywhere!), Apple just uses the device passcode under the assumption that people won’t forget it

But then turns out people don’t realize how very important their device passcode is, which is why Stolen Device Protection had to be invented

I’ve been time-boxing for a couple weeks now (I used to time-block from tasks, now I time-box for outcomes).

It’s taken a little tweaking, but it’s really helped me get focused. The key for me is building in Flex Time for when things go off-plan or letting my mind wander on YouTube or social media, and building in specific times of the day to deal with Slack/Telegram/Email.

While I'm talking about something other than music and stuff…let's talk external SSDs for a minute.

High speed devices demand a lot from their connection. These drives tend to come with very short cables...for a reason. The longer the cable, the higher quality it has to be (often with electronic enhancements).

Don't replace the cable with a long one “for convenience”. Use the cable that came with the drive, or invest in an expensive Apple cable...don't snag a $15 random-letter-brand one.

nickfoster,
@nickfoster@hachyderm.io avatar
