Been reading Machiavelli again and it has me wondering what's the best play for Biden re Gaza.

Leaving Hamas in power is undesirable; they reliably regrow and cause problems. Permanent Israeli occupation of Gaza is undesirable; occupation by an alien force will be non-stop problems. If Fatah controlled Gaza, that might be... okay?

Machiavelli would suggest giving Gaza to Fatah would create a weak state, but allowing Fatah to defeat Hamas in Rafah would create a stronger state.

@BlackAzizAnansi My conclusion is that he's a cryptocurrency bro, not an influence agent, who found an audience. If you like his work, he'll probably do more of it.

opendna,

@BlackAzizAnansi ...Mind you: we have come into contact with one of the guys who ran disinformation mills in 2019/2020. He was an American dude in California. 100% a dangerous psychopath who had 0% scruples about lying for money. He pivoted from fantasy sports or something and made a small fortune publishing fake news.

@pfefferle @Gargron tl;dr Mastodon basically DDOSed my WordPress instances. ~30k in exactly 30 minutes, then back to baseline ~0.

Between 18:28-18:58, it looks like every Mastodon instance decided to request the posts which were federated WP+AP months ago.

Any idea why?

My credit score dropped when I paid off my car.

My credit score dropped when I paid off my student loans.

Credit reporting agencies told me: "You should get more loans to increase your credit score."

The system punishes you for not owing them money.

They want you to be in debt.

Credit scoring is one of the biggest scams.

opendna,

@FluentInFinance The easiest trick to a high credit score is to have one no-fee credit card with a major bank that you keep forever, and raise the limit on whenever possible.

The reason most people's credit scores drop when they pay off their student loans is that those are usually their oldest accounts. If 20yrs of creditworthiness disappears with the debt, it's going to move your score.

There is this trope in fiction: A boy gets bullied on his way to school; his dad teaches him to fight. It always seemed so bizarre to me.

Somewhere in there is a less perplexing story about a young person learning to deal with conflict--

But, I spent a lot of my childhood waiting to be "jumped" on the way to school. Because, I was being bullied, just not physically.

I was looking forward to learning kungfu and taking them all out. LOL. 1/

opendna,

@trachelipus @futurebird My school district was pretty lax about bullying but they started to take it a LOT more seriously when the little Asian girl with straight A's showed up with a gun.

"Green" tech is a scam on the environment
"Renewable" energy is another scam and con word. The illusion that we can have energy without environmental costs. Let's stop lying for a change.

"A wind turbine can require nine times the mineral inputs of a typical gas-fired power plant, while the average electric vehicle contains between six and ten times those of its conventional counterpart, according to the UN report that is due to be published on February 26."

https://theecologist.org/2024/feb/22/there-nothing-green-about-urban-mining

opendna,

@gerrymcgovern Yes, of course building renewable power costs resources comes with a cost.

But that's a rather deceptive statistic because it excludes iron, steel, concrete, and petroleum. A 15MW coal generator weighs about 100t vs <5t for a 15MW wind turbine. None of that difference in mass is counted by the stat, nor is the 0.5t of coal required per MWh.

Got tired of having this conversation over and over again so I just spent way too long making this:

@haifisch @sidereal I'm guessing "intermodal" contains a lot of baggage. In an industry notorious for poor maintenance and under-investment, things with wheels suffer from the Tragedy of the Commons.

peeps: I am also running into this error, does anyone know what could be causing this? And what the solution is? https://wordpress.org/support/topic/fatal-error-applying-update/

UPDATE: Thanks to @opendna I found out this error is due to a mismatch between WordPress and the installed plugin.

opendna,

@Skoop My first move would be uninstalling Jetpack and Jetpack features, updating WordPress core, then re-installing Jetpack.

Looks to me like you somehow got a version mismatch between the two.

  • opendna,

@gwit @lightninhopkins @DrALJONES You're too low by at least an order of magnitude, probably two. Recall the US response to 9/11, which had similar deaths but a much smaller proportion of the population: about 4 million killed in the GWOT.

Mind you, Hamas is the government of Gaza and Al Qaeda didn't use GoPro videos of raping Americans to promote their success. If any country had done what Hamas did, the US response wouldn't have been as restrained as the GWOT.

    opendna,

@gwit @lightninhopkins @DrALJONES I'm more than a little evil: I'm Canadian. I know our history. Our "shame" is retaliating against SS war crimes with greater war crimes.

By all means, send the leadership of both Hamas and Israel to the Hague, and prosecute criminal trials for every war crime in this conflict. Until that happens: Hamas committed unprecedented war crimes on October 7th, and Israel gets to remind them why following the laws of war is a better idea.

    opendna,

@TomSwirly Does an act genocide in October provide casus belli until January?

    opendna,

@TomSwirly Perhaps you would advise Israel to mimic the British response to the Mau Mau cause for independence? Or perhaps the occupation of Ireland?

Nah. If Israel took a lesson from the Brits about war and insurrection, the slaughter would be greater and more horrific.

I don't lack humanity, I lack hypocrisy. You don't know the difference.

    opendna,

@TomSwirly Sorry you have that reaction to looking in the mirror.

    opendna,

@TomSwirly If you're not willing to agree that Hamas should face war crime charges too then yes, you are.

You're advocating a very specific genocide.

    opendna,

@TomSwirly I think Bibi & Co should too.

What are the Top 5 Condiments you have to have in your kitchen?

    opendna,

@RickiTarr I had to look up what a "condiment" was to be sure. ("Is salt a condiment??")

    1. Rock salt
    2. Mixed peppercorn
    3. Sharena sol (Bulgarian "table mix" of salt, savoury, paprika, fenugreek, thyme...)
    4. Tobacco sauce (tie)
    5. Soy sauce (tie)
    6. Maple syrup (tie)

The popular evidence that homeschooling is effective is largely premised on the research of one man. His research turns out to be garbage. One notable group has found that homeschooling can be regressive, harmful, and enable abuse: his children. https://wapo.st/41dMz3T

    opendna,

@HeavenlyPossum @Geoffberner @AdrianRiskin I'm referring to a pervasive theological movement in the US.

    opendna,

@HeavenlyPossum @AdrianRiskin @Geoffberner A state is an organization with a monopoly on the use of violence. I'm only aware of two modern anarchist states, and neither renounced violence or permitted slavery. Anarchism within a liberal state can be nonviolent, but that's not quite the same.

In my lifetime, many failed states have seen slavery revivals, some dictatorships tacitly permit it, and it has been found where liberal states are too absent (usually sweatshops, farms, and brothels).

    opendna,

@AdrianRiskin @HeavenlyPossum @Geoffberner The first paragraph is supported by the re-emergence of slavery in Yugoslavia, Congo, Libya, and permissiveness in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Thailand, and PRC.

The second gets support from Northern Mariana Islands, and periodic prosecutions across the US. (I've seen prosecutions Michigan and California come up in the last month.)

    opendna,

@HeavenlyPossum @Geoffberner @AdrianRiskin It is a threat because it can (and does!) mobilize violence without the state, and sometimes against it.

I oppose their violence because it seeks to exterminate myself, everyone I love, and and my own culture of pluralist tolerance. I don't think that's unreasonable.

You got me: I'm a hypocrite for being intolerant of intolerance and being willing to use violence to protect the peaceful.

    opendna,

@HeavenlyPossum @AdrianRiskin With allowance for every possible form of social organization, yes. Any social organization which can mobilize enough violence to stop a bad state is functionally a state.
