It looks like I will be writing my weekend blog post on appeals.

A lot of people have the same questions, and on my blog, I can think out my answers.

I do know a few things about appeals.

@Teri_Kanefield Extra points for not making bad jokes with the word "appealing”.

Edit: Ooops, too late.

A friend of mine is interested in dipping his toe into Mastodon to follow his son; the son posts about five times a week. The friend might also follow a few other people (like me!) but doesn’t care if we post.

Is there an iOS Mastodon client that does notifications but you can say “only notify for posts from this subset of my subscribed accounts”? I thought that @ivory would do this, but I don't see how.

For all the folks hating on iTerm2 because it added some opt-in integration with ChatGPT, there's a new beta out today responding to those concerns.
. . .
This beta adds some safety valves to eliminate the
risk of private information leaving the terminal
via the AI endpoints. While an API key and
explicit user action were always needed to use AI
features, some users asked for an impenetrable
firewall for safety and regulatory purposes.
. . .

First time in many years that I've shaved my face, and I didn't even draw blood!

Those of you who know me or have seen pictures know I've had a 1--3mm beard'ish for a long time.

I'm having my throat slit† open in surgery tomorrow morning for a complete removal of the thyroid gland so I thought I'd spare a nurse some trouble and take a stab at cleaning away the hair.

No thoughts and prayers please. I'll report back here if and/or when I survive

Even though it's Flame Friday, I'd prefer calm and reasoned responses to this question.

I often set up boring CLI-based Linux hosts to do minor server things at a VM provider. They let me choose between images of up-to-date Debian and Ubuntu (among other distros with which I am much less familiar). Is one noticeably better than the other; if so, why?

I'm reading a technical report written by a group of Dutch researchers and I'm finding way less to copy edit than I do in similar reports written by native speakers of English.

Does anyone outside the RHEL ecosystem use Podman? 🤔 Whenever I suggest Podman, other developers or PMs insist on Docker, which is far more popular and has a stronger brand. Even many RHEL users prefer Docker. Red Hat should have addressed Docker's issues instead of creating another tool that, while good, few people want. And yes docker can run rootless too but it has same limitations as podman rootless like can not bind below 1024 port or create device nodes etc

paulehoffman,
@paulehoffman@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft Yes, in some communities, “if you have problems with Docker look at Podman" is quite a common repsonse.

    @b0rk As a random follower of yours (who knows extremely little about nix), I'm interested in why you are spending so much time on nix. Is this for a new book? Is this because you nix is of similar importance to git? Or just because?

    Here we go again: The boom in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing will drive a spike in energy use, the National Grid has predicted. Data centre power use 'to surge six-fold in 10 years' https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-68664182 all this power usage for shity LLM/AI to write poems, pictures, videos etc from stolen data to train AI.

    @nixCraft There will not be quantum computers in data centers within a decade. They will still be sucking up all their energy in specialized labs.

    started using a Mac as my personal machine recently after exclusively using linux for 20 years and one of the most surprising things has been that the options for creative software (making vector graphics, fonts, etc) on Mac really are much better in many cases

    feels like one of those things that everyone knows but I never really internalized

    (do not lecture me about the options available on Linux, I promise I know)

    paulehoffman,
    @paulehoffman@mastodon.social avatar

    @b0rk Advice: ask one by one here. You’ll get a variety of answers, but at least one will be very correct and longtime dual users will boost it.

    A new RFC that I have co-authored was published today. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/rfc9539/ RFC 9539, “Unilateral Opportunistic Deployment of Encrypted Recursive-to-Authoritative DNS". That title is probably meaningful to half of the folks who follow me, and gibberish to the rest. In short: there will now be some more automatic encryption on the Internet, but it is not strong encryption because it is not authenticated. But some is better than none.

    (This is the 77th RFC I have authored or co-authored.)

    paulehoffman,
    @paulehoffman@mastodon.social avatar

    A followup: A bunch of you starred and reposted this. One of you, @kevin, read the RFC carefully enough to find not one but two technical mistakes, and reported them using the IETF errata system. They have been verified, and should appear soon. This is how the RFC series works!

    Trump filed his reply in the immunity issue in the Supreme Court.

    It's so bad it is embarrassing. It is exactly how not to write a legal document.

    To review: The issue now is simply whether the Supreme Court will put the trial DC-J6 trial hold while it considers whether to grant cert (hear his appeal.)

    Ordinarily the order is this:

    💠 Person loses and files a writ for certiorari (which means asking SCOTUS to hear the appeal.
    💠 SCOTUS decides whether to hear the case.

    1/

    paulehoffman,
    @paulehoffman@mastodon.social avatar

    @Teri_Kanefield Not to get in the way of your footnote checking, but a related question: if someone who knows how to write a •good• amicus brief saying all the stuff you just did in this thread, would there be value in doing so? Is there any chance that a SCOTUS clerk would read it and help change a SCOTUS judge's mind or help sharpen their argument? (Not asking for a friend, and certainly not for myself.)

    Teri_Kanefield, (edited ) to random

    The DOJ filed its response to Trump's request for the Supreme Court to put his trial on hold.

    For a reminder what this is about, see this thread: https://mastodon.social/

    The response the DOJ filed is here: https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/24427532/23a745-response.pdf

    It sparkles.

    In addition to being done well, it was done quickly. SCOTUS gave them a week. They filed it in 2 days.

    Notice that they argue in the alternative: If Trump gets a stay, please expedite the proceedings as with the Colorado ballot case.

    paulehoffman,
    @paulehoffman@mastodon.social avatar

    @Teri_Kanefield Vacations are nice, but you could just have a partner or good friend take away your electronics for a day or two. They could even pretend it's your fault, because you have widely-read opinions on social media. You could whine like a teenager to get them back, and they could give you that arched-eyebrow “Now, Teri, you knew that this would happen…”
