Okay. I stand by my rant. But this podcast has a lot of info that gave me insights and understanding on the POV of RedHat. There is some fair stuff in there. Worth your time. https://linuxunplugged.com/517

Wakey, wakey Fedora fans:
I quote from Double your Profits in 6 Months by Bob Fifer: "You must eliminate all non-profit-producing strategic costs so as to leave more money for truly productive expenditures." IBM consulting and 3G make a living out of this. Then look at the layoffs while making a profit, CentOS drama, end of maintenance of rpm's, push for flatpaks and immutability (less maintenance) etc etc. Food for thought and action.

@techlore my go-to for a couple of years already. And speed in Asia is good. Having seen the drama this week I feel a bit more itchy about their parent company now though.

is taking place physically in Riga this November.

What would you like to see part of the online/remote attendance component this year?

@ubuntu I voted other, as in 'all of the above' ;-)

Will follow back for funny nerdy bios that sound like a cross between a spy novel and "The World's Most Interesting Man."

peppe,
@peppe@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane glad you recognized Graham Greene's classic. It gives a whiff of excitement whilst trodding along 🤣

peppe,
@peppe@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane it gives the impression of the wild Saigon, back in the day, that I've never really experienced. Although it was a total, corrupt mess, at least it was alive. But you can still 'feel' it sometimes around here. Love that feel, made me stay here.

Anyone know of a good vertical clock plasmoid for KDE?

@thelinuxcast nope, have searched heaven and hell for it, nothing legible to be found 😭

Is there a good password manager which works seamlessly on all major platforms (windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, android, browser) and has similar features to 1Password or LastPass but is fully open source?

peppe,
@peppe@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey probably in all comments but Bitwarden is my go to. Contribute 10USD a year and you'll have the pro version. Give it a go

I feel like I'm on a 7 Distros in 7 Days challenge. Here's hoping that Debian is my final resting spot. I'm tired of hopping and I just want things to work. After today's disastrous podcast, I just want things to please oh Linux Gods, work the way they are supposed to.

Debian is supposed to be the stable distro. They best not be lying to me.

@thelinuxcast if you have a VM or so try out my image at github.com/kinoite-saigon/kinoite-saigon. At least I included Krusader in the immutable image 🤠

Okay, I'm an idiot when it comes to immutables, so I need to ask a silly question:

If I install something on Silverbllue, say a Tiling Window Manager, will it just be removed next time I update?

peppe,
@peppe@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast https://ublue.it/making-your-own/

That guide, with some ups and downs, enabled me to churn out 4 immutable images, based on Ublue in the last week. Kinoite-saigon, Sericea-saigon and Silverblue+Cinnamon. I've added and removed sw from the images itself and made some new ones, with Sericea enabling a Copr repo with a special gtk shell for Sway by @nwgpiotr It was fun to learn.

peppe,
@peppe@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast @nwgpiotr the ups and downs indeed. Still don't know anything about anything, including git 👻 as an example: GitHub.com/sericea-saigon/sericea-saigon

@popey @linuxmatters exactly this yes! I've just been cooking my first own spins based on Ublue by @jorge and that great group over there. Who said immutable kills geekiness? Great fun!

For Vision Pro to succeed, Apple needs to make wearing a headset seem normal

Opinion: Apple normalized AirPods and smartwatches. Can it normalize headsets?

So I tried to install Debian 3 times.

1st time failed to get to the installer, no firmware despite it being a non-free iso.

2nd time, got it installed, but even installing amdgpu wouldn't let me change resolution.

3rd time, did the net install of the non-free iso, got it installed, but would not boot. Got stuck at Plymouth one time and at the launch of CUPS the second time.

That's three failures with three different non-free isos of bullseye.

Will try again tomorrow, but only once more.

Everytime I go on Odysee, the content there seems to drift more and more towards conspiracy theories, complete disinformation and nonsense, or at worst ultra racist / xenophobic / hateful rethoric. The staff has a history of just saying amen to everything, including white supremacist stuff.

I’ve been thinking of abandoning it (I would keep PeerTube as the alternative to YouTube for people who really don’t want to use YT). Out of curiosity, a little poll about my content:

peppe,
@peppe@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxEXP Nick, for now I prefer YT, even though it is the big evil 😅 At least it gives me a way as well to turn off Sponsorblock for your (and some other's) videos so I can contribute a bit to the channel as well. And it is where I can find all my favs in one place.

Okay, trying to get snapper set up for the first time and when I tried to enable grub-btrfs.path, it says it doesnt' exist. grub-btrfs is installed, so that's not the problem. The regular service does not exist either. So it's either called something else or I"m having another issue.
