"NPR looked at foreclosure data across several states where records were available. In New York, NPR found at least 10,000 old second mortgages that foreclosure activity had been initiated on in just the past two years. Those loans originated back during the subprime-lending housing-bubble days of 2004 to 2008.

In Maryland, where more detailed information was obtainable, NPR found at least 500 old second mortgages that had been in default and unpaid for more than a decade but now a company has taken the first step toward foreclosure. In other words, more than 500 zombie mortgages in a single state that are now coming back to life as companies file a form with the state indicating they intend to foreclose on the property.

"The numbers to me are very scary," said Andrea Bopp Stark, an attorney at the National Consumer Law Center who has been looking into zombie second mortgages. "

Russia Is Buying Politicians in Europe. Is It Happening Here Too? | The New Republic

"The Voice of Europe scandal is merely the latest example of Russian influence on the continent. Last year, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project revealed that politicians in Germany, Italy, and Cyprus were paid by Russian operatives to introduce legislation literally written by Russian intelligence officers. The OCCRP also uncovered examples of parliamentary staff members, party activists, and members of think tanks publishing articles in European press outlets under their name, while the articles were actually written by Russian handlers…"

"…It is naïve to think the same pattern does not exist in the United States, given the ample evidence of coordinated pro-Russian talking points from several Republican politicians. Just this week, Marjorie Taylor Greene spoke to Steve Bannon about Ukraine’s persecution of Christians, which is a Kremlin talking point aimed at boosting the pro-Moscow wing of Ukraine’s Orthodox Church.…"

"… In 2018, a Texas-based firm donated money to House Speaker Mike Johnson. That firm is 88 percent owned by three Russians. And last week, we learned that Trump Media received loans from a Russian bank to help the company stay afloat before it went public and at a time when no U.S. bank would lend to Trump.

Any donations that might have been made through anonymous LLCs to PACs—perhaps with attached quid pro quos—are likely to remain opaque, due to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision…"

"… The Heritage Foundation—which has spearheaded Project 2025, the authoritarian blueprint for a future Republican administration—has become increasingly cozy with Hungary, and even hosted Orbán privately last month. It is quite possible, perhaps even likely, that some people who are on the Russian payroll were at the Heritage event, their role to influence and build support for pro-Russian policies.…"

"When I look at today's Trump, especially in court, where he vacillates between grunting, skimming pointless articles, and losing consciousness, I hear every one of the 4 components of malignant narcissism screaming. His narcissism screams from being pummeled and chastised and made fun of and no rank-and-file supporters showing up at the court to protest. His sociopathy screams because he's out of money, out of patience, and he's running out of time. His paranoia screams because David Pecker and Hope Hicks didn't do enough for him and he feels betrayed, and also his lawyers aren't being nasty enough with Cohen. And his sadism screams because - how dare they gag him and not be fearful of his vengeance and retribution.
It's arguably the worst pathology known to mankind."

"Whooping cough is caused by a bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. Pertussis often begins like most other respiratory infections, with typical symptoms including a runny nose and a fever. The distinctive "whoop" cough may only appear after a week or so of illness – though it does not occur in all cases. As such, confirming cases of whooping cough may require a laboratory test.

Whooping cough is very infectious. On average, a single case of pertussis can transmit infection on to around 15-17 other people. This infection rate is similar to measles and higher than the COVID variants.

The reason whooping cough is so infectious is in part due to pertussis having a very long infectious period of up to five weeks – where infected people can pass the bacteria on to others. Prompt treatment can greatly reduce transmission – antibiotics shown to reduce contagiousness just five days after starting treatment."

@pelielios whooping cough is sometimes called the "hundred days cough".

apparently even after antibiotics kill the bacteria, you continue to cough for months. (that was my experience.)

rayckeith,
@rayckeith@techhub.social avatar

@pelielios well, flu shots are less than 70% effective, so maybe pertussis shots are also less than 100% effective, or it was an environmental irritation.

also, "hundred days cough" is a folk name, not a precise diagnosis.

Connected cars’ illegal data collection and use now on FTC’s “radar” | Ars Technica

"The Federal Trade Commission's Office of Technology has issued a warning to automakers that sell connected cars. Companies that offer such products "do not have the free license to monetize people’s information beyond purposes needed to provide their requested product or service," it wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. Just because executives and investors want recurring revenue streams, that does not "outweigh the need for meaningful privacy safeguards," the FTC wrote."

RetroArch brings its free multisystem emulation to the iOS App Store - The Verge

"RetroArch isn’t an emulator but, rather, a front end that you can drop emulator cores into. So when you want to play a game, you need to load that game’s core first (although if you try to load a game with the wrong core, it will try to suggest the proper one for you). The app also has features like online gameplay, remapping buttons or keys per emulation core or per game, fast-forward and rewind, and gyro control.

You’ll need to be on iOS / iPadOS 14.2 to run the new version of RetroArch or own a Vision Pro. It’s not available on the Mac version of the App Store, but that’s not a problem since there’s a macOS version (and versions for other operating systems as well) that you can easily download from the RetroArch website."

(how do I get it to run a good version of Centipede?)

"Here in Boston, we call such incidents “Storrowings”, after the crosstown route where they most frequently occur. In the years since my previous post, neither the design of Storrow Drive nor the bridges that span it have changed, so it’s not surprising that the calamities have continued unabated.

"Local brewery Trillium even has a beer called “Storrowed”, named for the phenomenon."
