I've been giving serious consideration to removing SSL from my blog… it doesn't accept data and I keep bringing up old browsers that really can't handle the "new" versions of https (TLS, or something…).

Or maybe optional… 🤔

Give me reasons why I absolutely shouldn't do that (please ❤️ )

Pop quiz (hot shot).

How many, and which, HTML elements don't require any children nodes but require an explicit closing tag?

I'll give you the first one: script.

(partly because I'm not 100% sure myself, I think I am, but not quite 100%).

What's your favourite card game (with a normal deck of cards) for more than 2 players?

Looking for recommendations of bloggers (people!) who write about web components.

I'm also interested to know if anyone has a hot take on why it's taken a decade to get traction (long content, not twoot replies).

Send me your links!!! 🙏

a11y friends - I've been thinking about "ffconf" and how it reads out as a single word (rather than "FF Conf"). The visual brand is "ffconf" but on a screenreader I want it to read out differently.

I thought I could use aria-label, but VO on macos is still seeming to just say it as a single word.

Is there something I should be doing?

Legit question:

Are you paying (either monthly or one off) for your browser (polypane, sizzle, etc)?

As repairs go, I'm probably most nervous about this one. Mostly because there's no failing!

I think the GOV web site is actually pretty cool (from a content access POV), and it's great they blog about what's what, but I'm also a nitpick, so immediately the Crown change post stood out to me like this:

I present to you: my brain.

Actually getting the data for an MRI is fairly cool! (it was a perk of being a test subject for fatigue and MS)

Anyone know of a good (mac) replacement for TextExpander? I've been using the last version where you paid for the app (rather than a subscription) and lately it keeps getting stuck in an 100% CPU loop (no idea why).

I'd imagine by now there were some decent competitors.

I'm having a brain far moment.

If you're forced to use AM and PM (which…IDK), anyway, if the time (24 hour clock) is 12:30, what time is that using a 12 hour AM/PM clock?

Is it really 0:30PM ??! That's…that's so dumb.

Currently running a task that checks the http status on all the out bound URLs from my blog - all 1,482 (with obvious 200s removed, like github or youtube).

Once complete, I'll check for 404s and replace the URLs with links to the latest 200 copy from the archive.org project.

If it goes smoothly, I will write it up...

JS Bin turned 15 years old today (context: I authored it).

I know the "cool kids" probably don't use it so much these days, but it's still pretty active (and drumroll…stable).

I still want to rewrite it from the ground up, but it's on a list that's already pretty long!

CSS text fragment selector (please)

I wonder actually if @mia might actually be able to weigh in (or slap down…) on this?

This is bit of a stretch ask, and, possibly very vague, but - I've been trying (and struggling) to find potential speakers for #ffconf that can talk on the subject of "how to think critically / being sceptical".

Ideally wanting UK based, but can stretch to Europe.

Any suggestions?

Ah. My avatar (here and on BirdShite) is 9 years old. I was 36 and now I'm <does maths> older. And a little more… "set".

Do I update to the pessimistic looking avatar that I have on github https://github.com/remy or just leave the ridiculous sarcastic happy thumbs up forever more?

A talk I'd love to see at :

AI: a cautionary tale, but is there real good to be had?

And sorry chaps, I don't want it to be a white guy giving the talk (again). Love you, but let's make some space.

Trying to validate a weird redirect/301/ssl issue.

I'm visiting https://www.vim.org on FF and it's fine, but in Chrome Canary it's saying the certificate is invalid.

Can anyone else try this out too? (I'm on a mac) - I'm wondering if maybe it's fine and I've somehow hosed my cache… 🤔

I got a bluesky account (somehow), and I've no idea where to start with it. In the "find accounts to follow" it's just a long list of random topics and people.

Is that normal, they just toss you in to the great wide unknown and hope you work it out?

Super specific question, but no one to actually ask:

Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past - how can I get from the dark world back to the light world?

I'm missing flippers and can't work out how to get them in dark world.

Has anyone talked about the weird thing that Chrome does where when it's in dark mode some dark isn't the same dark as other dark? https://youtu.be/FzfGPQa4heA

What an absolute headache this has been, but I've finally managed to restore one of my micro services - getting the timezone for a visitor: https://ip2tz.isthe.link/

It takes the requesting IP (or via query string) and finds the tz in 3.1m records, very fast and without a db.

We've always had your twitter handle on the lanyards, but with the eventual implosion of BirdShite, I wonder if we shouldn't bother.

🤔 Do people still look at lanyards and follow on socials? … or am I just an angry old man shouting at the clouds?
