For all the nice things I say about OneDrive, i'm frustrated with them today. Someone shared a folder with me, and I can no longer make the "Add Shortcut to my Drive" option appear reliably for me. This was the way to accept a folder invitation previously, and it worked reliably as of last month. Now, when I do locate the option, it just adds a web shortcut (.url) to my drive. The previous shortcut was more like a symlink, allowing me to access the files through Explorer. Now I just get a file that opens my browser to the folder. These are obviously not the same thing at all. Maybe this is what happens when someone only gives me read access to the folder? Either way, this is not intuitive and as much as Dropbox sucks in most other ways, they got this part right.
Although whenever I do figure this out, at least the folder won't be taking up space in two people's drives.

@Moopypoo Hey, do you use NPlayer on your Jelly Star? I seem to remember that being the case. I've seen it work properly on other phones, but on my Jelly Star, it's not showing files within folders. Once I'm in a folder with audio files, I just get an empty list view. Wondered if you also ran into this. I'm using Foobar2000 for now, which works well if you change a couple of settings, but NPlayer does have more cloud support.

simon,

@Moopypoo Gever heard of that, but will check it out. Maybe NPlayer is just bugged. I'll write to them at some point.

Too bad there’s no sweet spot in the TeamTalk universe between the all powerful admin and the regular human. It would be nice to have a couple of people on hand who can’t blow up the server, but can still kick out the troublemakers.

simon,

@evilcookies98 There totally is. You can give people permission to kick users, ban users, and manage all channels, but not update server properties. You can even make people an automatic channel operator on the main channels without giving them permission across the entire server. It's pretty extensive.

So, can I have a show of hands, who still plays here? I've heard of it for sometime, but only started playing it yesterday to get myself into the world of MUDS to see if I really like that style of game. Seems I do. Any other MUDs people want to recommend, with as less combat as possible, do reply here. I can't wait till I can start playing ClokMud sounds really awesome

simon,

@Rachelk I play Erion. It's technically possible to play the game without combat at all, but even when you do fight something, you can use autoskill to automatically cast a certain spell every few seconds. The world is big, but not overwhelmingly so; there's a command to run to a specific area; there's lots of crafting and missions, and there are 11 classes, with each character having 2 classes that can level together. It's easier than Alter Aeon, but that's part of why I like it. AA gets very grindy and tedious at some point.

So, this might be a longshot, but I'm kind of wondering if anyone even remotely knows what I'm talking about, or can give me some pointers.

When I was a kid, I got a cassette tape, I believe for Christmas, of Bugs Bunny hosting some sort of trivia show, with Daphie, Sylvester, Yosemity Sam, Tweedy and others as contestants. He would ask them trivia questions and they would give him often funny wrong answers. Over time, though, Bugs would elliminate the contestants for various reasons. I don't remember why, though. The only one I do remember is Sylvester trying to eat Tweedy. At the very end, someone overthrew Bugs and forced him to be a contestant on their new show or something. I think some of it was loosely based on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, but I'm not sure. It's been over 20 years since I heard this tape, and I only remember very specific moments from it. But I would instantly recognize it. There's a small chance I still have it, and maybe I'll digitize it although the quality might be pretty bad.

Anyhow, I'd love to know what this tape actually is called so I could look it up and see if there's a digital version I could get. Does anyone have any clue of a possible name or other lead I could search?

@musicalman This is an excellent query for https://old.reddit.com/r/tipofmytongue

wait. TWBlue added support for what? Loading remote local and federated timelines from other instances? Oh shit.

simon,

@FluidEscence Yes. Yes they did. Don't make me switch to that thing. :(

Hey, Uber Eats? I love the idea of what you're trying to sell me on. But see, here's the thing... after being in Chicago and having Chicago style pizza, I promise you the place I will never order it from (no, not even if you pay me) is Little Caesars. Not even if you offer me a second one for free. We have much better local places here... do better.

simon,

@quanin I actually like them, particularly their deep dish. Am I just missing out on the really good stuff? There are other places here.

If you use a screen reader and you perform a special button dance in the Fakespot analyzer page, while waiting for results to load, you might notice the following text:

"If you are seeing this, stop messing around with the console".

I do love when someone tries to be a smartass and it fails utterly.

Southwest just emailed me to ask if I booked my rental car for my Denver trip. They're a little off the mark on that one I'm afraid

simon,

@alyssa6595 This would be especially funny/silly if you specified accommodations while you were booking. I think Expedia has done this to me.

All right now I am looking for headset recommendations Needs to be reasonably comfortable so I can lay down with it, sound decently, and have a good microphone. Looking for something wireless, and bonus points if it can also bluetooth to another device. #headsets

simon,

@munchkinbear @bryansmart @ElementalEcho I think OpenRun are the PoenComms without the extendable microphone. I have never seen both to compare. I also have the OpenComms.

Writing this on the Clicks keyboard case for iPhone. Not sure what I think of it yet... its certainly gonna take some getting used to.

simon,

@jscholes I gave this a pass when I found out it was a portrait keyboard. That already sounds too cramped to be of real use. There's a new Rii Mini available, plus I feel pretty efficient using Braille screen input and could probably get back to being good at direct touch typing. I can't imagine holding the phone by one end is comfortable either, unless you get particularly good at thumb typing, which I'm not. And that's leaving aside all the issues you've found with it. no arrow keys is absurd; sighted people use those too.

I actually remember using this greeting on an answering machine way back in I believe 1996, and would you believe I actually had a message with someone pushing buttons, and then hanging up? lol!

simon,

@JamminJerry Mine was this for a while, with a necessary trim to the start and end. https://youtu.be/VjpcLplkMUs?si=cZ9enJtQ_zq2eRhq

"Always on top" is evil and should never have a keyboard shortcut.

simon,

@nick You haven't lived until you've spent multiple weeks trying to figure out why your web documents keep going blank in NVDA, only to find you've accidentally made notepad2 always on top and it inexplicably causes literally everything to break in unexplainable ways.

simon,

@nick Oh, it kinda sounds like you had that exact problem. My alt+A is "stop after current"; I find this much more useful. Does Foobar have default assignments now? I just had to assign them all.

simon,

@nick Yep. Can't remember how I figured out the problem, it might have been trial and error or might have been @tspivey. Either way I was seriously contemplating reinstalling Windows. The problem would disappear randomly after closing other applications too, so it was really hard to track back to Notepad.

Because I am lazy. gpt.py. import google.generativeai as genai
Yeah, I never renamed that python file.

simon,

@FluidEscence If only there were a unix utility for that.

simon,

@FluidEscence Being sarcastic. This is an easy sed fix. Not that i'm judging the laziness.

VMware Fusion and Workstation are now free.
I bought them legally for the first time ... on April 6th.
That's what I get for doing the right thing. I won't make that mistake again.

The summary of the Sonos AMA is worth reading if you have a deep interest in this issue. I am somewhat heartened by it, particularly given that we now know that most of the Sonos iOS app is written in Swift. This means that an excellent experience is possible.

Finally decided that I'm going to buy a braille notetaker to replace my rapidly aging and probably failing Mac. It's honestly easier than hauling around laptop+braille display. Literally the only thing I'm going to use it for is keeping notes and writing invoices. So if anyone is selling one I'd like to chat.

simon,

@Pawpower @SerenaTori Consider one of the Braille displays with notetaking functionality. I have the Mantis Q40 (a qwerty display with note taking stuff in it), and it is fantastic. I prefer it to my laptop keyboard, and it makes a good notetaker on its own as well, with basic support for reading books.

simon,

@SerenaTori @Pawpower For a desktop setup I'd want to find some old display that had no keyboard whatsoever. I have a PacMate display sitting behind my keyboard on the keyboard tray, and it's perfect. No complications and reboots and updates. It just works. It's probably old enough to drink in the US now, but so far the dots all work.

simon,

@Pawpower @SerenaTori Converting a bunch of RTF files is very doable. It's something you can probably automate without much trouble. I used to also really like RTF, but I found that outside of Windows applications it's not really readable, so I tried to get away from it. DOCX is a fairly open format even though it seems like it should be more proprietary. I can look into some available options and possibly just write some code to do the convertions.

simon,

@Pawpower @SerenaTori That's interesting, I had the opposite experience which made me move away from it. I don't have much good to say about the touch unfortunately, but I hope it works better for you than it has for others I know. I find that these new notetakers are too bloated and complex, which results in way too many things that can go wrong. That said, you might find it useful to run Android apps and web stuff on it, if it performs well. There are just certain things that are annoying on a phone.

simon,

@Pawpower @lynnskyi @SerenaTori I can understand why people might have tried to discourage going phone-only. Using iOS with a keyboard honestly feels way more clunky than using Windows with a keyboard, and I say that having used a couple of Braille displays with both. But also, if you can make it work, it sure saves a lot of equipment and it's nice to have everything on a single device where possible. I recognize that through practice and command assignments, it's a lot more powerful than it looks.
