Keeping pet cats indoors would save millions of native animals and billions of dollars. So what's stopping us? (www.abc.net.au)

Broader adoption of keeping cats safe at home would have large benefits for cat welfare, human health, local wildlife and even the economy. So, should cat owners be required to keep their pets contained to their property?...

On desktop you get a preview of the article, which I’ve now included in the heading since I’m guessing it doesn’t display on mobile / in apps.

The animals they catch are weakened from pesticides.

Good news, they also kill native bush rats!

… Wait that’s bad news.

Maybe I’m wrong

You totally are, but at least now you know

That’s a whole heap of words to say “maybe”. On the other side of the world.

If you’re happy being a selfish piece of shit, feel free to leave your cat roam. When Mittens gets hit by a car / contracts feline aids / otherwise meets a premature death, you can rest easy knowing that akshually it was probably pesticides.

“There’s a possibility that some other factor may play a part in offsetting one of the negative impacts of free-range cats… therefore, all other positives of containing pets may be completely ignored”

Foxes are also introduced, so I’d say cats everywhere are “better” because there’s half a chance their numbers can be reduced through requirements for owners to contain them.

Also, cats can be baited too if required. And, IMO, it is at the point where it’s required.

That’s paid though, right? I don’t use Word, and if I wanted to I’d need to buy it. Firefox is free and accessible to everyone.

What’s the point of a rebate? It’s just going to double the impact of price rises next year.

I guess it might give a break (and swing enough votes) long enough to push through more serious long term change.

If it’s not being followed up with anything long term it’s a complete waste.

Then I guess for security reasons you won’t be signing up.

I’ll bet there’s a massive meet up planned in Melbourne. Thousands are expected, and streets are being closed in preparation.

In Brisbane it will just be me, the bandicoot, and the coax cable guy arguing over who gets the Falcon.

Melbourne’s daily threads have like 65535 comments a day. Brisbane’s daily thread generally has 3.

I’m getting sore shoulders doing all this carrying.

I check in on your DTs and chuck out some upvotes every so often

/C/Melbourne: I can’t believe the daily thread only got 400 comments today

/C/Brisbane: 400? We’re only getting 4!

/C/Adelaide: You guys are getting daily threads??

I don’t know if there’s a per-subreddit shadow ban or whatever, but the mods made it clear that they don’t like me deleting my old posts and ever since then nothing I post gets any replies or updoots.

I mean my sample size is small, maybe a dozen posts since the API dramas, but still.

I really don’t like rebates, because they’re temporary and it just means the impact next year will be twice as severe.

It also means companies will up there prices because rebate money means less complaints and defaults on bills so obviously that’s a green flag to up prices.
