    @lzg damn right! but hell, an ad I dont understand is a better ad than one I do understand for two reasons:

    1. there is no need anyone has to ever see an ad. they are parasitic
      and non-comprehension mitigates that.
    2. theoretically my non-comprehension could prompt curiosity, yielding an opportunity to learn something. which is insane because even though accidental, it would mean an advertisement yielded mutual value -- which has heretofore been considered impossible.

    lmao what a world.

    @lzg Can we call it stupid? I think it‘s appropriate.

    @lzg We voted against ads in the city! It didn’t work out… this time.

    @lzg I feel like in many ways the advertising is almost as bad a source of “techies have taken over” as housing prices

    luis_in_brief,
    @luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

    @lzg there was a bulletin board on 101 last week pitching an app just for “GPs and LPs” and now we’re getting over the head even of most techies

    @danilo @luis_in_brief @lzg I miss the days of sf advertising: when there were just command line commands on ads with no context

    luis_in_brief,
    @luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

    @skinnylatte @danilo @lzg honestly? I’m a little sad my first job out of college was a little early for that window; we invented a very recognizable command line invocation that at the time was “cool” and “cutting edge” and now is “a giant gaping security hole” and if we’d come along a few years later we would have plastered that all over the T

    @grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

    @danilo @luis_in_brief @lzg I have a pet hypothesis that this stuff actually makes a lot of tech folks feel incredibly lonely even if they don't realize it because a lot of it is super reminding you about gatekeeping and that tends to be bad even for people who are SAFE behind the gate

    grimalkina,
    @grimalkina@mastodon.social avatar

    @danilo @luis_in_brief @lzg it's like "only you can get it you're so special" and then you're like "wait oh god only I can get it..." The nightmare of faux belonging

    luis_in_brief,
    @luis_in_brief@social.coop avatar

    @grimalkina @danilo @lzg there’s this weird simultaneous “it’s cool to live in a place that is so deeply fitted to me” and “it’s a nightmare to live in a place that is so deeply fitted to me”

    @lzg Because in this case the "language" is meant to be understood by a small group who have disproportionate wealth, whereas actual minority languages are generally spoken by people without much power?

    @lzg The last time I visited SF I saw a billboard with a Linux command line on it that bothered me.

    1. It was ugly;
    2. It would probably not have made any sense to most people, and so was just blight;
    3. It did make sense to me, and I don't like being made to feel complicit;
    4. The syntax was wrong.

    @lzg

    This ad also annoys me because they're trying to lure me into yet another vendor-lock-in trap. Obviously that's not going to happen, but I'm kind of offended that they tried.
