In 2022 SCOTUS ruled 6-3 that public school teachers & other staff can lead students in prayer.

Now Louisiana will require all schools that receive public funding to display the Ten Commandments, including colleges and universities.

If it’s prayer these guys want, if you’re a public school teacher who wants to learn the Islamic call to prayer, i.e. the Adhaan, to teach your students, let me know.🙃

@QasimRashid my dad is very sick. Probably not going to make it. People whose lives he's touched have prayed in protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim faith traditions and I believe the person who prayed for him yesterday (a long time friend) prayed a Hindu prayer over him.

We welcome them all. Not because we're desperate but because we welcome prayers offered in love.

I'm pretty Louisiana is a year away from banning all but one. It's disturbing and wrong.

JOdell,

@QasimRashid Also the Satanic Temple must be accomodated.

@QasimRashid then, of course, there’s the fact that there are only nine commandments and different sects disagree on how to stretch it out to get a nice round number. 👍

@QasimRashid Thomas Jefferson wrote at length debunking the lie that British/American common law was based on the Decalogue. The same liars and the same lies are still with us.

Chellis_9RSS,

@QasimRashid Since there are two different sets of 10 commandments that appear in the bible, have they specified which set of 10 Commandments it should be?

iramjohn,
@iramjohn@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid First Commandment prohibits idolatry, but the school day begins with flag worship. There’s a certain irony there (which tends to completely escape these folks)

samiamsam,
@samiamsam@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid but republicans and christians are fine with adultery, idolatry, theft, lies and murder

so it probably should be the 5 commandments and those are in question too

@QasimRashid Even as an with 40+ years of experience with Christianity, I just don't get this Christian obsession with the 10 Commandments. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to display the words of the radical 1st-century rabbi from Nazareth?

The "Beatitudes" might be a good start. They seem to ignore those.

It's all just polishing a pristine marble tomb while trying desperately to ignore the stench of rot coming from it. Hmm, where have I heard that before....

@QasimRashid politicized religion is the worst because people has no defense against, if you did you'd be labelled immoral, takes 2 steps back, they set the pace, whoever is more strict to others

This is also about time that the Satinists chime in.

However, consider this option, drill into the 9th commandment, the one about false witness, and the punishment for its transgression. Lying and defamation are quite serious crimes.

Now let’s talk about what Ben Shapiro’s been saying of late (no particulars here, I just rely on Ben being hisself).

@QasimRashid This is not constitutional, I do not care what the Supreme Court decides. This is no longer creative (mis)interpretations under originalism, but straight up revisionism of the Constitution. Normally, this would be accomplished through the passing of a constitutional amendment, but as that would require a legislative supermajority, it was inevitable that the Supreme Court would use their powers to bypass all that.

The real Ten Commandments are in Exodus 34:11–26, so it will be interesting to see what list is use.

The ain’t that bright. Once the demands that they’d like their prayers in schools, this nonsense will get .

@QasimRashid @ai6yr I’m an atheist, so I also demand a poster put up that simply says “There is no god”.

They’re probably gonna hear from the Satanists, too. And the FSM people.

@dogzilla @QasimRashid I grew up in a state where the government (and public schools) were hand in hand with religion, and it was terrible. (Utah, which still has LDS seminaries attached to all the high schools, or right across the street).

jmax,

@QasimRashid - Were I constrained to be a teacher in Louisiana, I would find or generate a poster displaying all of the versions of the ten commandments, in Hebrew, with Greek and English translations linked, and provided with extensive annotations about translation issues.

And pointers to texts about biblical translation.

jmax,

@QasimRashid - Y'all want me to open that can of worms with your kids? OK.
