I’ve had mixed feelings about manager readme. On one hand I do a verbal version in my first meeting with new collaborators to let them know I communicate directly but mean well.
OTOH, the power dynamic as a manager can read as a list of flaws your team has to put up with.
@shanselman@carnage4life I was thinking along the same lines. My fear with writing down my weaknesses is that it feels like I’d be saying, “I’ve accepted these weaknesses as present and unchanging.” And on one hand, I’m 51 and my weaknesses are probably hard to change at this point. On the other hand, I’m uncomfortable with giving up.
@carnage4life it’s a good idea, but this is a bad way to do it. “I am bad at X” — what am I going to do with that, if X is part of your core job function? “I struggle with X, so I find it helpful if my reports do Y to accommodate that” okay if Y is reasonable perhaps I can do that. If this guy is just shit at finishing projects then my only move is to expect he won’t finish projects and I will have to move on from the team.
