“I’m making a whole city! There are roads and tracks and roads crossing over the tracks! And buildings!” There are also many bus stops and a museum. (Grateful for washable markers) #urbanism#transit#PublicTransport#trains#bike#BikeTooter
Seattle finishes first Dutch-style protected intersection. To turn left, cyclists first go straight across, then turn left— unlike typical treatments in the US, cyclists don’t have to mix with cars during left turns.
I like when #transit systems do this. Real-time next-train arrival screens OUTSIDE the subway station at street level. So you know if you have to hurry or not BEFORE you start into the station!
En route to #Geneva to attend a #PhD jury at the Geneva #observatory, which is located near the French border outside Geneva.
Instead of renting a #car, as I used to do in the past, this time I’m renting… a bike to go from the station to my #hotel (about 16km away) and the diary to the observatory.
@AlexSanterne@academicchatter Congrats, it's a great way to get around the Geneva area (which is mostly flat), and there are very nice routes between the town centre and the observatory.
Rereading my old blog posts points me to resources I found and then lost over the years. I've often asked people if they remember a piece about how time on the bus is more valuable than time driving and here it is, linked in a post of mine from 2010. Not a study but full of points that are true for me, by Michael Lewyn https://www.planetizen.com/node/44534. Anyone know of research on this?
@BarbChamberlain
I remember being so angry about the initial analysis. Angry that the value of a person would be measured by their productivity as a worker. Angry that productivity would be measured in terms of a single dimension. Angry that anyone would buy it.
It was a turning point in my own approach to analysis and measurement.
(But, sorry, I can't help with the value of time question)
@danwentzel I read this as Montpelier, VT and thought what! Vermont as free public transport?! WOW! Then I saw the link, Euro, and realized it was actually probably France lol. Still nice to see though!
#Shimano is so annoying… I’ve been trying to eliminate bottom bracket/crankset clicking on my #gravel#bicycle. In theory it should be easy. BSA, Hollowtech… If there’s even one, microscopic grain of dirt, it’s gonna click and/or rub, no matter what…
I’ve removed crankset, BB, cleaned it, drowned it in lube and assembled it again, torqued to spec. I bet it’s gonna click right away I start my next ride…
@ssamulczyk finding and eliminating weird noises on the bike is the worst.
I once discovered via pure accident, that the terrible creaking on my old CX bike was actually caused by the very crappy ratchet in the rear wheels hub.
@wlukewindsor They are really nice and easy to use. You don’t have to clamp the thing like the normal QR. The lever is built in a way that you can sort of pull it and rotate to a desired position without unscrewing it.
It was hassle free until I started mixing parts. The issues began when I combined Deore right crank with SLX left one. It doesn’t work without extra spacers which puts strain on the bb…😂 Now I’m all slx but I hate the chain line…😵💫
My general stamina is far better than that of my wrists when I cycle. Any tips or postures you use to help with wrist strain while biking? I could go a lot further if I could reduce wrist strain.
@StephanieMoore My advice would be to use a more upright position (might need new handlebars or a new bike if yours is more "sporty" or aerodynamic). Also try adding suspension, at least on your front fork, and perhaps on your seat post. Those steps made a huge difference for me.
"The way to fight #crime is not with stops based on hunches and pretext, but by investing proactively in communities and with #policing targeted at people for whom there is suspicion of serious criminal conduct.
On the other hand, there is a real #trafficSafety problem in this country… #transportation officials should focus their efforts... better lighting… #protectedBikeLanes & pedestrian crossings; self-ticketing cars with speed limiters, … [#transit]" 🚎 🚲
meanwhile in #Portland, "PPB Expands Central Bike Squad" ...to ten (10) total. It wouldn't hurt a few of the rest to get out of their ($80k/each) cars sometimes though, the city is less than an hour wide on #eBikes.
@enobacon The other way of looking at DDACTS would be to recognize that where you build stroads (especially when you bulldoze pre-existing neighborhoods to do so), you not only get vehicular violence, you also increase gun, knife, fist… every possible type of violence as well as property crime. You can’t arrest or ticket your way out of bad planning. City planners rather than cops should have been the primary users of this data from the start.
