Marveling at the world

Lots of Martian rocks and landscapes, looking all too familiar, but don't be fooled by that: Mars is an inhospitable toxic planet. Let's not mistake fiction for reality.

I like dirt and rocks, but I Am Not A Geologist (IANAG).

Warm greetings to those 2000 people who chose to receive my occasional 65 dB bursts of space, tech, art, and political noise, thus turning them into messages bearing meaning rather than letting them slip into obscurity "like tears in rain" ¹
(I obviously disapprove of the word "followers")

For those technically inclined, 65 dBA is a legal limit for outdoors noise at residential areas.

The Fediverse.
Such a lovely place.

¹ like tears in rain: A nod to Rutger Hauer's monologue in Blade Runner.

Meanwhile, "boring" keeps on operating a very real rover (actually two , including ) on another planet.

Here, the rover appears to have reached a rocky milestone on its way to its next science target, Bright Angel:

@EUCommission
"Have your say"? LOL! Sounds like something a king would say to his subjects.

A couple observations:
• "or others will decide for you" is ironic if you think of it. We are indeed voting for others who will decide for us.
• "Democracy starts with YOU" + "PARTICIPATING DIRECTLY in decision making processes" is what real democracy is. Referendums are such, but are scary.

→ Despite all that, the EU representative system works miracles, compared to any existing alternative.

Martian rovers are known to paralyze by fear and die, when they encounter such creatures.

LOL! Sorry (not really) to be a party pooper, but are we supposed to cheer for each and every time they test a rocket? Whether it explodes on the launch pad, in mid-air, upon re-entry or upon landing? Have we done so with other tests? Like with NASA's tests, which are paid for directly by the taxpayer?

No, we haven't. So then, wake me up when the tests are done with and a usable rocket can fly and transport cargo and people safely to somewhere.

That's how success will be measured.

65dBnoise,
@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross
I've done tests professionally, extended in scope and time, also other risky stuff, maybe "heroic" too (definitely heroic, by today's ridiculous use of the word) a couple of times. No one cheered, I was just doing my job. In fact, I'd be very suspicious if someone did cheer; either they'd have no clue about the job, or they'd have not done their own part as they should, and cheered for those who did.

We'd congratulate each other for a successful test, and then go for the real thing.

65dBnoise,
@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

@krystman
Did I miss it? I didn't see anyone cheering in there during those 3 hours, except maybe for the commentator who did it silently, and NASA definitely didn't gather a crowd to cheer.

Thanks for the link.

The body expressions Gael gas programmed into his 'poem' (the original meaning of the word, 'ποίημα', is 'something made') are worth a thousand words and this one: Art.

@65dBnoise@mastodon.social avatar

What astounds me in political commentary these days is the complete lack of analytical depth, as if political systems did not exist and everything were a matter of good or bad will of persons, like, Trump, Musk, the rich and the Republicans are bad, Biden, Obama, (Soros?) and the Democrats are good, etc. It's like Neanderthals looking up at night, seeing the planets move, and describing it to others. No theory, no underlying physics, no cause and effect.

No political science.
