Tonight's dinner is baby back barbecue ribs, mashed sweet potatoes, salad, and cheddar garlic biscuits! The potatoes are boiling on the stove and I am about to transfer the ribs from the crockpot to a sheet pan so they can spend a few minutes covered with barbecue sauce under the broiler so they get crunchy! It is going to be amazing

First day of summer school went well. We are reading a book called "Two Canes on the Tundra." It is about a first Nations boy growing up in Alaska who is blind and his grandfather who is having knee problems so they both need canes although for different reasons and different types, but it is a story about acceptance. we are also doing lessons on pouring liquids, spreading things like peanut butter and jelly. Yes, I am getting paid to read books and eat snacks. Is this living the dream or what!

Today I had a really positive experience with Uber. My driver who took me to the coffee shop was nice, but the guy coming home was really great. He was asking me about my job and in the process of talking about assistive technology. We started discussing AI and I was telling him about Be My Eyes. When he dropped me off, he thanked me for educating him and said he wants to go home and sign up to be a Be My Eyes volunteer! I thought that was kind of cool!

I believe I am going to return the smart glasses I purchased because many of the fundamental functions such as checking battery status, knowing if the glasses are on or off, etc., are not accessible for a person who is deafblind. Meaning that those particular statuses are spoken only by the glasses… Which I cannot hear. Everything else, such as OCR results and seen descriptions is pushed through the app which is accessible via braille. Also, it takes forever to recognize things. It is so slow!

Yesterday around 7 at night I was just really exhausted after basically 2 days of very intense peopling. I was standing in the middle of my living area trying to remember what I needed to do next and coming up blank when Phoenix came over to me and took my hand. I assumed she was going to show me her empty water bowl or take me to the back door so I could let her out but no, she lead me down the hall and into the bedroom and right to our bed. Hahaha, I guess she knows whats what!

Today, in its infinite wisdoms, our United States federal government released new rules for people traveling with or importing/exporting animals into/out of the US from other countries-- including Canada and other rabies free/low risk countries. There are no exceptions for service animals. These rules go into effect on 1 August. I return from Canada on 25 July. Boy did I luck out, holy fuck! Also WTF, Government, you have just made so many peoples' lives about a billion times more complicated

Dear folks on my timeline who have disabilities and teach daily living skills. During summer school, I would like to work on tasks such as spreading things evenly, mixing items together to form a new thing, such as making tuna or egg salad. I also want to work on cutting things evenly and safely. We do not have any method to cook things so I am looking for suggestions For snacks that could help with teaching these concepts. It would be great if they were not expensive as we are buying the snacks

Dear mastodon brain trust, I have started collecting crystals. Many of them feel the same or are carved into similar shapes. I am searching for a box with small compartments that I can put each crystal in with a card that has a few key words on it. This will help me keep things organized, and find things more quickly. I am not sure if there is a name for such a box, the closest I can think of is a tackle-box! I'm wondering if anyone has ideas about exactly the term to use when I search?

Woot! Got my Meater bluetooth meat thermometer charged, and paired with my phone via the Meater App. There are some things you need to identify to set it up like exactly what model you have and if there's a plus sign on the charging case and I didn't know for sure so I had to fool with it a bit but it's ready! Now I just need to decide what to cook.

I often wonder about people who say stuff like, things were better when I was a child, in the 70s or 80s, things were better/cheaper/people loved each other more… And the whole time I am thinking that is just not true for me! I have never once during my adult existence long for the powerlessness and terror that was childhood. I would never trade what I have now for life 30 years ago! It makes me sad to think there are folks who feel that their best days are behind them

Finally decided that I'm going to buy a braille notetaker to replace my rapidly aging and probably failing Mac. It's honestly easier than hauling around laptop+braille display. Literally the only thing I'm going to use it for is keeping notes and writing invoices. So if anyone is selling one I'd like to chat.

They say we are going to get between two and 3 inches of rain today, so my interpreter is heading to my house with all of her dogs because we would like to have all dogs in one central location since today is very busy and if there is street flooding, it is easier if we only have one house to try and get to. Lucky for me, she is stopping on her way here to get me a boudan breakfast burrito,as well as an iced latte. We are then headed into the country where the flooding is bound to be a lot worse

Right now, I am reading a historical fiction series that is set in the 1700s and in this particular installment, one of the main characters has learned how to vaccinate people for smallpox, and a lot of the story has to do with the villagers reluctance to be vaccinated, and as I read, I think the more things change, the more things stay the same!

What you don't realize before you work with terminally ill children is that mostly you forget they're ill and it's just everyday stuff. And then other days you are slapped in the face with rapid decline and the knowledge that this child will not live to graduate high school. That the world sucks and is supremely unfair and will break your heart.
