@jon any reason other than timetables why you're not taking the train here? (Asking bc we're planning to take that Warsaw-Vilnius service soon)

(zB anhand was in Norditalien passiert?) Ich nehme an, unsere klugen und weisen Politiker*innen werden sofort alles trocknen wollen, aber vlt haben sie schon dafür einen Plan?

🚆 I've just been sent this screenshot from the DB Navigator, showing a 3-hour delay in Berlin, even though the train was on time.

The personnel on board told passengers to ignore the delay, saying that it was "an error from the AI". (But emails offering compensation were sent).

Do you train nerds know about this DB system to predict delays? And why it fails so often that DB employees learned to ignore it?

@jon Thanks. The hypothesis that people now say "it's the fault of the AI" in lieu of "it's the fault of the computer" should probably not be discarded.

@ErikJonker did you read the full paper (i don't have access)? But it looks like,in the treatment group, doctors recieved a text message with the findings of the AI, whereas the control didn't. How can the authors rule out that the difference in outcomes doesn't come from the extra medical attention?

I've been thinking about 'negativity bias' (that you can appear smart by being critical) and I just learned about the "Cynical Genius Illusion': https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/trust-games/202111/the-myth-the-cynical-genius

"Research suggests that trust, rather than cynicism, is a sign of intelligence. Most people inaccurately believe that cynics are smarter than those who trust in others. This means that perhaps you should trust in people, but not let them know how much you trust them."

Yeah no -- I'm going to be LOUD about trusting in people.

algowatching,
@algowatching@social.nkb.fr avatar

@debcha I've read your link (but not the papers given in reference) - is it possible that gender explains most of the variation in cynicism and perceived intelligence? (e.g. do men perform cynicism more to fit gender expectations? Or: are women cynics also perceived as more intelligent?)

The boss of the Republican party made clear that only people that pay him will receive protection, and that those who don't will be destroyed. This is not fascism we're seeing, it's the mafia state.

Here's what I wrote 5 years ago on the topic and I still stand by every word https://blog.nkb.fr/mafia-state/

It nags at me when people say "why can't Berlin just do as Paris does with parking and cycling policy?”

The answer - in large part - is Anne Hidalgo has some power to act in Ville de Paris, the inner city, where only 1/5 of the urban population live. No one has power to act in inner Berlin, only for the whole Land - and that's harder

Mapped and explained here: https://jonworth.eu/why-berlin-cant-just-do-as-paris-does-on-cycling-and-parking-policy/

algowatching,
@algowatching@social.nkb.fr avatar

@jon on a slightly different topic, one could add that cycling in the outer city in Paris is often worse than cycling outside the Ringbahn in Berlin.

🇪🇺 The has been agreed upon (in secret, last night). The text is not public yet, only the PR spin.

But it's already clear that blanket face recognition is coming for us, Europeans, too, as it's allowed for "specific and present terrorist threat" which is police-speak for demonstrating peacefully or hearing something in Arabic.

🇫🇷 The French welfare agency uses an algorithm to detect potential fraudsters. Every month, it ranks the households of 32 million people, including 13 million children, with a "risk score".

For the first time, @LaQuadrature obtained its source code and could run it.

The criteria that increase the risk score are

  • being poor,
  • living in a poor neighborhood,
  • being a single mother,
  • being unemployed,
  • having a disability.
