The US is legally bound to support Israel, and I agree that this administration needs to do far more to stop the wholesale slaughter of the Palestinian people. So by all means, protest loudly, make your objections heard, demand better.

If you live in the UK or USA, you need to understand one thing about the coming election:

You need to vote defensively.

Neither of the main parties are appealing. But if you don't vote for the lesser evil you may end up helping a totalitarian horror get elected.

Hold your nose and goddamn vote, dammit. THEN go on protests. Because if you don't vote for the lesser evil, the victor will welcome your protests with bullets.

The prize for political purity this time round is a shallow grave.

Once your candidate participates in a genocide, and the party rallies behind it, you have lost.

You have utterly failed as a democratic institution.

You're the baddies.

You have lost the right to browbeat others for refusing to surrender their consciences or their sense of revulsion at the unspeakable horrors being perpetrated by the man they (and I) entrusted their vote to 4 years ago.

And given that 97% of Israel thinks the IDF is using either the right amount of force or not enough force, and since opposing the slaughter of Gazans makes them "Hamas supporters" in the eyes of a majority of the populace, they're at an even greater risk of being arrested on charges of supporting a terrorist organization. I won't judge.

I've thought about it a lot, and I think the only way we could actually begin reversing the climate crisis if if one nuclear nation announced it was setting a clock for 60 days for the nations of the world to hammer out an iron-clad, no-loophole, binding plan to reduce emissions, and that failure to complete it within that time will result in the launching of nukes.

I really think it would take something that extreme.

I was today years old when I realised that the reason that the intro to every youtube video sounds like setting an ad break, is that it is setting up an ad break. I've had whatever they call the no-ads subscription to google for years, and hadn't realised how awful the default experience was. How do people stand it? Where are the pitchforks?

I finally got a local mastodon running in docker. Now maybe I can actually do something?

The trick for me was running my own ssl termination from outside of docker. I didn't have any luck with attempts to run a proxy on the inside.

I'm gonna try to document what I did. Gotta make sure it's repeatable. Stay tuned.
