@grumpygamer The “+” in Return to Monkey Island+ for Apple Arcade means there's something more to the game? 🤞🤞

@cdf1982 No, Apple just needs a different name.

Sorry. I have no context for the quote but in this month's Edge there's a quote from a videogame dude saying they hate achievements and what they've done to games and I don't think I've paid even the vaguest attention to them in years.

Quite enjoyed the novelty when they were invariably challenging the player to try playing in an unusual way but they don't impact the way I play a game even slightly anymore. I don't know how normal this is but I'd guess at "very"

@psychicparrot42 @Bobbins I use achievements as an easy way to do analytics. There is a reason why RtMI as an achievement for each part.

@simonschreibt @someguyjg It is true. Gatekeeper is not run if the app installed via another app. None of my games are notarized. Although they are signed, but you might not even need that with Steam. They don't do anything special, it's a Mac thing.

@simonschreibt @someguyjg Itch.io build worked fine, no gatekeeper warnings.

Watching @pagetable talk on the 6502 made me very teary-eyed nostalgic for making SCUMM on the C64. SCUMM was all developed and compiled on the LFL mainframes so I don’t have any backups, but I’d love to see that 6502 code again. There was a time I lived in 6502.

grumpygamer,

@pascal @pagetable Lucasfilm, Ltd. It was used through out the company and it fit well is DOS three letter extensions.

grumpygamer,
@grumpygamer@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@telarium We rewrote everything in C using the 6502 as a guide. We had C functions with A, X and Y variables to make things quicker. 🙂

    After 6 months, I've had to resubscribe to Adobe PS. I work with too many people who send me PS files and there is no alternative that can open and save them reliability. It sad how many "helper" apps Adobe installs and how often they try to connect to the internet. I block them all, but it's scary. I have to unblock them every 30 days. Please do not suggest alternatives unless you know for a fact they load and save .psd files seamlessly. Do not suggest GIMP or I block you.

    @TylerHendrix They looks too much info. Text, shapes, etc. It's way to much friction to ask an artist.

    People of gamedev.place, I have a question: have any of you used generative AI in game production? I.e. to generate (production) "art", power conversational skills of NPCs, etc.

    I can see how GenAI could be useful for blocking out things. I have yet to see a system that can generate content that doesn't require more work to get production ready than it would take to create manually.

    Stuff like Unity's Muse Animate, Scenario, or (FSM forbid) Kaedim confuse me.

    (InnoGames uses Scenario iirc)

    @badlogic Using AI in your game is like hiring a 5th grader to do the work.
