Loading levels from JSON files is now working!

There are still a bunch of things that need to be added (for example, right now all the objects are using their default behaviour, rather than loading the settings from the JSON) but it actually bloody works.

This is a massive relief. It means all the levels made with the Unity version will work. Makes me hopeful I might be able to replicate the in-game level editor too!

Video showing the Unreal 5.3 editor open with the MainMenu level loaded. It has a handful of actors placed for lighting and atmosphre, but notably there's a BP_LevelBuilder actor. When simulation is started, lots of runtime-created actors are added to the scene forming a scene made up of glowing blocks floating above a distant, gridded landscape. A couple of turrets start to fire as the camera is moved around the scene.

@JeremiahFieldhaven Ah that's brilliant mate! I haven't tried doing anything like this yet.. are you doing that in C++ or is there Blueprints support for it?

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@JeremiahFieldhaven I love that you're able to save the levels you already made. Very cool!

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@JeremiahFieldhaven Oh nice thanks. Blueprints are amazing! Now I feel like I already have a headstart when I need to do this in the future! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Me: "Hmm why are my release phases not completing?"

Code: locEnv.setADSR(g->matrixScanPeriods[chan] * (iEnvLength + 1), envStyles[esp], envStyles[esp+1], envStyles[esp+2], envStyles[esp]+3);

Me: Oh for fucks sake.

Is Unreal 5.4 as crashy for everyone else as it is for me? I think I'll stick to 5.1 for now.

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad I know I'm quite new to the Unreal party, but 5.4 isn't at all what I've experienced from the other versions. I always found 4 very solid, 5.0 crashed occasionally but nothing like this. 5.4 seems to be very broken on my PC at least. I had to double check it wasn't some kind of beta or alpha release because it's really not a happy engine! I reverted to a previous version of the project and went back to 5.1 this morning and it's been much nicer ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘€

I miss video rental. It was fun getting out of school to rush to the video shop. I looked older, and bloke in the shop didnโ€™t seem bothered, but renting 18 cert films was always a bit of a dodgy move incase I got bollocked for it. A lot of the best films had certificates older than me! Then taking the tape home and jamming it into that big magnificent video machine to see what adventures were on it.. streaming is convenient but rubbish as an experience compared to going to the video shop!

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@raymierussell Yeahhhh like a lot of stuff, eh? Although the experience was amazing at the time, I'm sure I complained about the lack of choice, how all the biggest films are always gone before I got there, how expensive it was, how we don't get the newest films for ages after they release, or how annoying it was having to go back to the shop on a cold rainy day to return the tape etc.!!!

Hey so I know it's hard to imagine after the last few cycles, but maybe LLMs and other AI overhype will be peak techbro bullshit and we'll get a break from their arsehattery.

I was dunking, right, and I just dropped a whole digestive into my cup of tea. The whole thing! Thought it was done for, but I was able to reach in quickly and the whole biscuit came back out. Still intact! 1. Digestives are good, solid reliable biscuits for dunking aren't they?? 2. I think this means it's my lucky day!

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gilesgoat Do the sheep detect this? They do eat digestives, right, not Rich Tea?

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@gilesgoat Amazing! On the Rich Tea, I remember one of Jeff's videos where you only had Rich Tea to give the sheeps and one of them (may have been Lucky not sure now) wouldn't even touch it. Didn't even seem like he tasted it.. he just knew it wasn't his usual biscuit and rejected it. I guess it's the same when it's a digestive with a funny smell too!

Browsing through backups of my own projects (not freelance!) I have a lot of games that I've started making, spent several weeks or months on and not finished. I mean, I do finish at least one game a year, so that's something, but I think the ratio of unfinished to finished is probs about 4:1. feel like this isn't the best use of my time as a 'making money' person but is probably the best use of my time as a 'making games' person. It's all learning and I may go back to some of these one day..

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Farbs Yeah I don't feel bad at all about all the unfinished ones because of all the stuff I picked up from doing them. I do freelance game stuff sometimes and clients have asked for mad stuff that would have been way harder to make if I hadn't poked at these beforehand. There's always a lot to learn - especially across engines right - so the more practice we get, the better we get! (in theory!)

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dev_ric HA! I've heard that from you engine-y people! The benefit of not being a good enough programmer to make my own engine is that I never make my own engine. The downside of not being a good enough programmer to make my own engine, is also that I never make my own engine!! lol

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@dev_ric That's the sort of stuff you need to get up on the asset stores! Scrap together some documentation and put it all up for sale! CHA-CHING!* ๐Ÿค‘

*It's all fun and games until someone has to support it ๐Ÿคฃ
