@niconiconi The worst for this is HDMI-CEC which everyone uses a proprietary name for so that you think it only works that that makers devices. Our Toshiba TV calls it REGZA LINK but of course it works fine with Sony BRAVIA SYNC devices…

Funny that 23 years later we still can't do automatic touchless checkout for stores -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzFhBGKU6HA see https://www.theinformation.com/articles/how-amazons-big-bet-on-just-walk-out-stumbled?rc=hhpn9c

@codinghorror The closest I’ve used in real life is GU clothing stores that can RFID your whole basket of goods in one go, but you still need to go through a checkout flow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWJ3L50dfc0

I have this feeling that's been stuck in the back of my head and bugging me for years. Perhaps I've just become an "old," but I feel like there's some kind of disconnect between what I used to enjoy about programming and what programming has become.

The troublesome thing is, I still struggle to figure out what the issue is, exactly, despite thinking about it almost everyday as small frustrations pile up throughout the day.

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@bigzaphod These days whenever I start something new I feel like I’m spending more time dealing with the tooling and packaging than the actual coding. Back in the day you had true one-stop-shop IDEs or frameworks that you could just install and launch but now you have a million moving parts and none of them work together.

This goes 100x for web development. Before all you needed was PHP and mootools, and now you need 6 languages and 10 preprocessors

Here are three slides from my talk today. My predictions for the near future (of tech, software and basically everything).

More curl. More HTTP(S). More Open Source.

Is there any Mastodon client out there that treats your read position as vital data? I'm a "completionist" and want to read my whole feed in order.

@ivory is good, but occasionally I've brushed the screen and brushed the top of the screen and it scrolls to the top and then down a bit, losing my place

@MonaApp just completely randomly lost my place so I've lost faith

@IceCubesApp has no way to even undo scrolling to the top!!

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@santiago @ivory @MonaApp @IceCubesApp. Yeah I really miss the "unread" red bar that the Xchat IRC client had back when I was still on IRC.

Or at least I'd like a history/undo state, especially when multi-device sync comes into the picture

In better news, I just finished a +300 -500 refactor in one go, the unit tests passed the first time, and the feature worked flawlessly without any issues.

Interplay's "Bard's Tale" series let you import characters created in other CRPGs of the the time, including "Wizardry" and "Ultima." I always thought that was a neat idea.

Imagine if modern CRPGs did that, e.g. import a "Baldur's Gate II" character into "Skyrim." Although I'm sure someone's made a mod to do just that... 😛

@ChronRevisited I thought only NFTs could allow something like that 😃

Let's start a new social network. No formatting, no constraints. Just a blank canvas, any HTML tags you want. As many bouncy GIFs and blinking text as your heart desires.

We could call it TriGeoPod Cities.

@ActionRetro What I miss most of all is Webrings. I’d love a webring of all the currently maintained sites that still use basic HTML that is browseable on retro computers

My HARD OFF Megathread!

HARD OFF is my favorite store ever. It’s a Japanese chain of tech thrift stores that will buy your junk and resell it. There’s also OFF HOUSE (clothes/household items), the confusingly unrelated BOOK OFF (used books, games and other media), LIQUOR OFF, etc

I’ll start off by posting some overview photos of what kind of stuff you can find there, and then start following up whenever I find something interesting

Let’s go!

A portable VHS deck (presumably for use with a pre-camcorder video camera)

This funky red Betamax deck and a video wipe generator

A karaoke LaserDisc player with 5-song track selection

A US-spec closed captions decoder??

A red Sony Betamax deck
A laserdisk player with big buttons marked 1-5
A TeleCaption 400

I went to a new (to me) HARD OFF today and spotted a Wacom tablet. There are always lots of Wacom tablets and they’re always USB, but wait a second… that looks like a miniDIN plug… and… isn’t that an ADB pass thru?

Yes indeed, today the gods smiled upon me and now I am the proud owner of an ADB Wacom ArtPad II!

A blurry closeup of the plug revealing it is indeed ADB
The underside of the tablet with ArtPad II TABLET and KT-0405-A written on it

They also had a G4 and 2 G3s, but the G3s were in a sad state :(
