Were there any old phones that could browse WAP over wifi?

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@ActionRetro My Sony Ericsson C905 was a traditional feature phone with Wi-Fi

It also had a proper Xenon (not LED!) flash for the camera

So this MessagePad 130 showed up on PayPay Fleamarket for $45. Never seen a Newton go for this cheap in Japan (even with massive a black screen burn spot), and they're rare to show up to begin with.

The photos didn't show the screen, but revealed some bad battery leakage (which was also disclosed in the description), but I figured at least it could be used for parts (my pen on my 120 has lost it's end cap!)

It arrived today so let's see what we got!

The screen is good!!! What a relief!

We also got a 10 MB Flash card in here apparently (it was not mentioned in the listing)

And that battery leakage looks gnarly! Time to open it up to see the damage…

I think… we’re in luck? It looks like it was stored “face-up”, so the acid pooled in the rear case and seems to have spared the logic board??

The rear case was so corroded the screw standoffs just fell off.

A closeup of the bottom of the logic board of the Newton, showing only minor corrosion

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

I gave the battery contacts a quick wipe down with vinegar, and..

It runs!!! Success!! My first Newton OS 2.0 device.

There’s still a bunch of corrosion in the battery contacts though since I can’t get in behind them, I’m going to want to remove it and leave it in a vinegar bath overnight or something.

Does anyone have any hints on removing the battery contacts to clean them? Are they soldered to the logic board or something?

Ok it's time for a thread about the sencore AT985 atsc RF monitor, tbh first time I ever heard about atsc so no idea what format is that, but hey look! a floppy drive.

Apparently, you cannot install After Dark 4 on a Japanese version of Mac OS 8.6.

Wait, region locking was a thing. :meowfacepalm:

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@chikorita157 @yon I uploaded the Japanese versions only recently (had to buy them on CD and rip myself)

The thing that irks me is that literally anyone who's using their brain to research the "VR goggles" market for like a day could have told you this.

It has "vanity project" written all over it.

@thomasfuchs It's Tim Cook's Newton.

Maybe in 10 year the tech will be here to make it an affordable kick-ass product but right now it's too big, heavy, janky and expensive. But someone is too eager to seem revolutionary before it's ready.

People who use "WiFi" instead of "The Internet" are not the sort of people the rest of us should share a large computer network with. In this paper, I propose a massive netsplit whereas those of us who are worthy keep the actual Internet for ourselves while those who ask only for "WiFi" when signing up for online services receive a service package limited to the handful of services that they actually use on a daily basis.

I was messing around with my network today and spotted something funny - the Ubiquiti UniFi dashboard will actually by default classify Apple Internet Router/AURP in it’s traffic logs and even has a little custom icon for it!

So here’s the chart of the traffic my router saw over

one day after installing Monterey on one of my production machines

this is why i am extremely leery about ever touching newer versions of . ffs.

edit: could be OpenCore related. will remove that since i don't need it on this particular model

kalleboo,

@vga256 Isn't waning about possible data corruption a good thing?

I took two disks a friend has been using in Windows RAID for a year and put in a ZFS zvol and instantly ZFS started flagging issues with the drive that Windows was just ignoring.

Muting the word "eclipse" now since according to a calculator I checked I'll never see one in my life so it is irrelevant to me.

But not before leaving my favorite bash.org joke (paraphrased):

A> When does the eclipse start?
B> Three minutes after your launch it, fucking Java

This is one of my favorite weird mice: a Bluetooth combo mouse and number pad with built in calculator, made by Canon. There’s a button you can use to send the result of your calculations to the computer.

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@polpo One of those things I regret not picking up even though I would never use it - a calculator the that also acts as a USB number pad and trackball, with a send button for the calculator output

They never got VOCALOID to do English well but whatever TTS Neuro-sama is using has cracked it.

The job of a singer is over.

kalleboo,
@kalleboo@bitbang.social avatar

@SuperDicq Yeah I think the neurosama singing is basically an advanced version of the “make a Donald Trump voice say this thing” voice changers, but that still means that you can replace all the commercially viable conventionally attractive pop singers with cute anime grills backed by some random dude singing in his basement (which is what all vtubers are already anyway am I right)

Jon Stewart: “[Apple] wouldn't let us do even that dumb thing we just did in the first act on AI. Like, what is that sensitivity? Why are they so afraid to even have these conversations out in the public sphere?"

Tech giants should not be producing content. We need the 1948 breakup of the Studio System again. https://techhub.social/@Techmeme/112200019732650765
