Around 90 percent of employees in Sweden are covered by a collective bargaining agreement
And while Tesla doesn't have to fight 90 percent of all employess yet. If they're bringing in strikebreakers all unions must act to not let a prescedence happen.
Not only their own employees would strike, but also employees of suppliers and everything that is connected to Tesla so nothing will reach the company unless Elon personally swings into a truck and drives the stuff into his factories.
Unionized and in the automotive sector. Would 100% strike in support of the Tesla workers. I’d rather see Tesla leave Sweden than have them succeed in this.
This is where the game of chicken is. The only question it boils down to is does Elon love winning pointless battles that require self sacrifice or does he love money? It’s a hard question tbh but I think deep down we know he’s a money grub as a priority, in which case he’ll cave and compromise to keep selling cars in Sweden
I don’t know about Sweden but bringing in scabs is generally illegal in Germany. That is, you can’t bring in temporaries, you can, of course, hire more people but then you’ll have to keep them, and of course they can strike.
Amazon was quite successful keeping unions out here because the kind of people they employ aren’t terribly union-affine, also, noone wants to stay at amazon anyway, but Tesla? A car manufacturer up against IG Metall? In East Germany? Tesla can either cave, leave, or get beaten into submission.
This same shit appears to happen all over Europe in small variations and it works every single time. Their followers don’t even blink anymore when the lies are exposed.
“I expect them to show us what they’ve done and apologise if they have smeared others. I expect nothing less than that,” he added.
Spineless milquetoast cunt. They’re undermining democracy and he wants a “sowwy we pwomise we won’t do it again uwu”
Obviously he won’t do shit about it since he and his cronies need the Nazi support to remain in power, and clearly that matters more than the integrity of the government.
As an American who got to visit Sweden earlier this year, it was so refreshing and eye-opening to see how they treat people and property around them with dignity and respect.
It’s probably similar in a lot of Europe, but I did the speed run version going straight from the US to Scandinavia.
On one hand, yes good news people use a library for library things. On the other hand, is that the bar for human behavior now? Not to be, I don’t know, looting and burning books as soon as the staff is missing?
What is a reasonable bar for human behavior? Would it be reasonable for 1% of people to have library destroying tendencies? What about 0.1%?
If it’s more than 0.2% it would have been expected for at least one of the 400 people to do something bad.
“If they start employing strikebreakers and actively try to break the strike, then they have mobilised the entire union movement against them. Not just the Swedish Trade Union Confederation, but all of them. Then the issue at hand becomes less important.”
I can already see the German IG Metall union grinning and looking at the new Tesla factory in Germany. I would be careful if I were Tesla. Unions in Europe are extremely well connected.
I just love the feeling of union collectives banding together. Reminds me of a situation in Norway a couple years back where doctors wanted to strike: Now they’re essential workers, and can legally be prevented from striking by the government, so the union collective said “lol get fucked” and put a shitload of engineers from the offshore industry on strike instead. The doctors pretty quickly got what they wanted, and everybody got to see why we have to work together across sectors.
The Swedish Transport union, called “Transport” has already announced solidarity actions starting November 7, the actions include refusing to unload Tesla’s from ships.
The transport union has said that they have a lot more cards to play if they need too, but want to keep it a surprise. But actions would probably include refusing to deliver anything to Tesla.
Uh, they are “allowed”. As in they’re legal. But they’re disgusting bootlickers siding with oppressive giant corporations over worker’s rights. So often, they’ll be ostracized by family and friends, as they should be. That’s allowed too.
You know, most countries that have strike laws forbid this. In Spain, for instance, if the workers are on a strike, the company is forbidden to replace those positions in a strike. Neither with temporary, nor people from other places. And the company cannot fire them. Basically it’s a shackle, either you solve your strike or you are out of business.
It could work surprisingly well at some extent. I mean, Spaniards are hard labouring people and they put hours to work. But they also like to live the life (you know, paella, siesta and stuff). So the first couple of times it may come to pass, but things may hit the fan really quickly.
Also, cheap labour force and laws very favourable for the employer.
Things might roll along smoothly until the old contract expires and it’s time to negotiate a new one between the unions and employers. That’s when things could get spicy. Tesla demands that the employees are treated as slaves and company property, while the unions demand proper wages, maternity leave, siestas and lots of other things. Obviously, Tesla isn’t going to agree to any of that, and the feeling will be mutual on both sides of the table. Usually this results in a strike, and now we’re talking about a spicy turn of events. Can’t wait to see how Tesla would handle that.
