As far as I know, one of the headline features of microblogging networks is searching and following hashtags. On top of that, Mastodon (like Lemmy) tells users that it’s not important what server/instance you join, because of federation....
Granted, the warning says clearly "If you deselect Undetermined, you will not see most content", which places the onus on the individual user, as apposed to logic built into Lemmy on which posts/comments can be viewed, while also leaving it to each user to have to weed out alternate languages for their views which are...
Is there a Fediverse option for hosting fanfiction, or maybe web novels/serials/etc? Like an AO3 alternative, basically. I looked around but couldn't find one, the closest thing that kinda works are the blogging platforms like writefreely. If there isn't, do you think fanfiction would be a good candidate for federation?
I'm pretty new to the fediverse, and I find the idea amazing. But one thing concerns me though. How will server owners be able to afford to run servers with massive amounts of data coming through them? Theoretically speaking, if a Reddit migration were to happen how would server upkeep costs look like?
Concerning the current debate on Meta, I‘m a bit concerned over where I should make my home. I don‘t want corporations to intrude and ruin my just newly found space of freedom. They would just offer "help" and then centralise and privatise and infest it with ads, data collection and profit motive. I need to search for the...
I was recently thinking about how amazing it is that with this decentralized community we would have no censorship from big corporations and then I asked myself: what about illegal content? The kind of content that really should not be shared? As an example, what if someone creates a Lemmy instance and starts creating a...
I'm currently on a mission to compile a list of health-related communities and overall maybe turn that community into something useful and available to everyone. (If someone wants to help, I'll welcome it. This is just a quick and dirty start.)...
The Fediverse must be very careful to avoid getting branded as the "alternative to X". In my experience, platforms that have historically branded themselves as "alternative to" or "anti-" have generally not done well. Learned this from the last Reddit exodus: let's make this one different!...
Another fediverse newbie mucking about. Since joining I've been digging in and learning as I go, trying to determine what best suits how I'd like to interface everything. I am not, however, super well versed in all the ins and outs of this system yet. I'm not the most tech savvy person to be honest....
