I just love this image - it highlights why we need all the different telescopes: each of them looks at the same object in different ways. And only when working together a complete image emerges.

Here, 's wide field is combined with 's zoom-in and sharpest IR image we ever obtained, allowing us to study how radiation interacts with interstellar matter.

@vicgrinberg Absolutely gorgeous.

Do you know how one can get their hands on the raw, full-res images? I'd love to overlay them all in @napari as a demo... 🙏

@jni @napari the Hubble data are public and download able from Hubble archives (you can also use ESAsky https://sky.esa.int to find more datasets from different missions in the). Not sure whether the JWST and Euclud are yet, but if they aren't, it will happen very soon. A warning though, raw data means really raw scientific data here, not the kind of raw images from a normal camera.

@vicgrinberg @jni @napari A while ago I wrote a napari plugin to read FITS images, based on astropy: https://github.com/pmplewa/napari-fits It may not load every kind of image out there, but it should get you started if you want to dig into some raw data.

@vicgrinberg @napari thanks! yeah re:raw data I presume there are Python libraries to get NumPy arrays from the raw files, and hopefully not too hard to use as a domain novice! 😅😬😬😂

@jni @napari the problem is more than the raw files have ALL kinds of artefacts. What you are seeing is A LOT of work (as in: per image days or even weeks from professionals ...). Byt it's fun work that folks with more knowledge in astroimaging can tell about :)

@vicgrinberg that last shot is particularly lovely to me in that I can make out so many galaxies in the background
